Invisibility Quality YouTube Channels

There's already a YouTube topic of sorts, but it's super old and not quite of the same idea here.

Post high quality YouTube channels! To avoid fatigue and people not even bothering, try to limit your posts to 1 or 2 videos from 1 channel at a time. This thread will probably be fairly short-lived after people burn through the good stuff and only pop up again when someone finds something cool. That's fine. If a channel you really like but have already posted posts something you think is extra cool, go for it!

I'll kick it off with Townsends. This is a channel from a super-upbeat and passionate dude who loves 18th century cooking (and selling reenactment stuff from the period). It might sound kind of weird and niche, but it's mesmerizing in a way and very interesting from a historical perspective.

Post your favorite good YouTube channels with a short description!

Two Minute Papers features short videos (mostly between two and three minutes) about interesting computer research, mostly about stuff like computer learning, graphics and physics simulations and other similar things. They tend to be easy to follow even without deep understanding of the material.
The video descriptions also contain links to the papers of the content, for people who want to read more technical stuff about it.

An example:

Well I mostly follow science channels, some more serious than others. When I am looking to waste some times I watch silly stuff like RealLifeLore, SecondThought, Wendover and that bunch. I spend way too much time on youtube so I've got plenty to contribute to this thread.

To avoid overload I'll start with the good channels that are less known and work out from there:

Historia Civilis
, the guy talks about ancient civilizations, their politics, customs and most importantly tactical depictions of battles. Alotta Rome but other Civs too like Greeks, Egyptians and Celts. By the time you are done with this channel you will be like "wtf I love squares now."

Isaac Arthur, a fairly new and less known channel. The guy goes quite in depth (as much as he can without shutting out the laymen) and so his vids are long but interesting and full of information. The vid I am sharing is one of his oldest and so is quite a bit less shiny and polished than his new stuff. But it is quite thought provoking and I urge any science enthusiast to check it out:

This Place, another fairly unknown channel. The guy is rather interesting, decent animations and style imo, and talks mostly about human psychology and about biology. Not updating much, might be dead , but plenty of vids in the stockpile to see.

Mana

Rob Dyke -- Documentary-style true crime

Stoned Gremlin Productions -- movie reviews, food/drink reviews, riffing on badly made movies/porn (no nudity shown, of course)

Matthew Santoro -- Random facts! From Canada!

Game Theory -- Gaming with science! Also includes culture shock and some other things, but I ascribe mainly to MatPat.

ChaosD1 -- MMO reviews. He only does free to play MMOs, generally. He has done some free to try ones (WoW with its free trial, for example). And I think he did a few buy to play ones. I like him in particular because he is objective, listing the good and bad of the game he reviews and gives helpful tips for those who are interested in playing the game he is reviewing.

Those are the top ones I recommend.

It's mostly just so they don't get lost in the noise, so to speak. People are more likely to check out a video or two at a time than they are a huge list of channels.

Next up for me is Forgotten Weapons. Ian, the host, goes around to various auction houses, museums, etc and takes a look at old, rare, and unique guns (as well as some better-known stuff) and gives a good bit of history on their design and, when he can (most of the time), disassembles them and explains how they function (on rare occasions, he gets to take them out shooting, too). He also occasionally does series on the iterative development of some weapon families (eg, Berthiers and Winchester lever-action rifles).

Othias (C&Rsenal) here does really, really in-depth (read: long and detailed) videos on the history of every single small arm that got even a little bit of use in the First World War. He hasn't gotten to them all yet, but he releases a video on one every other Tuesday.

I met him in person at a gun show down in Columbia once. Cool dude. A lot taller than he seems on camera. He also does a run of high-quality gun-related posters every winter which I can more than recommend purchasing, if you're into that sort of thing. The photography is excellent.

There's also a side-show that goes on the same channel hosted by a long-time gunsmith named Mark Novak. They're all about his trade and how he does things. His videos release on the other Tuesdays, also every other week.

As a machinist I sometimes find some of his methods (mostly on anything related to working metal) to be fairly cringe-inducing, but nonetheless effective. I pity his poor cutting tools, is all. The end product is always what he says it'll be.

I love me some Fat'n'Fuzzy & MaeBae

Next up is a channel I already got Cantus addicted to. Steve1989 collects MREs and other rations from around the world and throughout history. And then he eats them (if he decides they're safe enough to). It sounds silly, but you get mesmerized by these videos very easily somehow. GQ even did an article about him. Nice!

If you're curious as to what the oldest ration he's eaten so far was, it was a piece of hardtack from the US Civil War.

Worth a sub just for Doraleous and Associates:

Likewise for Freeman's Mind:

EDIT: Looking back, episode 2 of Freeman's Mind is where the conceit really takes off:

My first batch!

Let's start with BardicBroadcasts. He doesn't update often, but he has really good reviews about fantasy stuff in general.

This is his most popular video:

He has a great voice, and knows what he's talking about. You can listen to him for hours and not get bored.

Second, RedLetterMedia. Hands down the best movie reviewers out there. Subtle, but absolutely savage.

Some of their best videos:

They do full movie reviews, trash movie reviews, and more. Most videos are pretty damn long, but you won't notice the clock once you start watching.

And yeah, they're mesmerizing. Specially when he reviews European food like it was some kind of alien shit. You guys surely eat garbage if you get so excited about some of our most basic cuisine lol.

There's multiple channels, but Steve is the best, hands down. I could listen to him review pointless shit for hours, and I'd still be craving for more.

He's not fat any more, either. Was almost skeleton-tier when I saw him. Apparently he did the "cut all carbs 100%" thing.

Also of note is that apparently Mae is stalking all mentions of their channel on the internet; I just got an email from Othias saying she saw my forum post, asking if I'd be game to help Mark out on some small stuff at some point.

Well, maybe not all mentions. I think Othais had to show her a /k/ thread.

Their hidden videos are some of their best, by the way.

AndyJP already listed all my favourite science channels.

As for gaming, I've ben following Many A True Nerd a lot lately. His Total War series are really great. He's currently doing a danish run on MW II.

I think it's time we made a ruling that this thread cannot have embedded videos. Links or nothing.

Well I haven't had any particular issues loading this thread, but in the meantime, you can always just disable the "Automatically embed media" in your own posts.

CARNIK CON IS COMING BACK.

For those unaware of Dugan Ashley, here you go:
(TL;DW: He's kind of like FPSRussia, but not retarded, knows what he's doing, does musical bits, and is basically just better in every conceivable way)
He stopped making videos years ago when he got sick. He has teased coming back a few times, but now it looks like it's actually happening. He also nuked his youtube account recently (something about wanting a "smaller electronic footprint").

Some of my real life friends claim that this video and others like it don't qualify as Art. Can you believe that??

I finally got around to checking out The Great War. Personally, I stick to their specials and Q&A videos, but a lot of people like their week-by-week centennial WWI coverage, too.

Going a bit further back in history, britishmuzzleloaders is another great channel. Rob is a wealth of info on 19th century British muzzleloaders and their associated tactics. He's also a big fan of the Martini-Henry (I mean, who isn't?). He also goes shooting in a fucking beautiful part of Alberta.

The Combat Camera Archives have a youtube channel now and they are constantly uploading raw footage (as well as old prepared stuff) both very old and very new.
