Default SoLWorks Contest - Hero Concept - Terry Crews

Update: We're turning this into a true contest.

Folks will vote on the best ideas/most significant contributors to the project and the top three individuals will get ~$30-50 worth of merch (and/or giftcards).

For the project itself, the only rules are that it must fit the overwatch universe, it must fit Terry Crews real life or acting personality, and it must be unique (no stealing from other creators/games).

The information below is an example of what some folks can start with, but no one is obligated to use it. Work together or design your own Hero. Iterate from another group's or merge yours into theirs. It's all up to you, so long as you create someone worthy of Overwatch's world.

Quote:
We're all disappointed that the big man didn't get his shot at being Doomfist, but why not explore more personal iterations of Mr. Crews? After all, Overwatch is about giving its characters a chance to voice their heritage. For our Deus Ex Pecks, it's probably a good idea to do the same.

For the character name, because we can't really just flat out use his, we need to do a little research. Sadly, etymology doesn't help with Terry, but Crews has a latin root.

It's also got variants that involve augmentation, and of course coming together as a group. As a starter name (aka it can change at any time), let's try Terrence Cresce.

As to what his character is, here's one iteration we can try.

Backstory: TC grew up in Flint, Michigan right alongside the rise of Omnics themselves. While parts of Flint had been rehabilitated, its community was still devastated trying to care for those afflicted by long-term damage from the early 2000's. Omnica Corp., looking to make a name for itself, bought out Flint's broken sections and created an Omnium dedicated to "Serving the community that humanity had failed." The good will and name-brand Omnica built over the years laid the foundation for both its rise and fall.

TC's father was an Omnic coordinator, hired from within the community to help integrate the robots into the health system as well as provide quality control. Although he wasn't a genius, his basic engineering skills were enough to keep the project going in its early years. During this time, he met TC's mother, a nurse in the local hospital. The two soon married and within a few years, TC was born. TC spent his youth with his parents, learning an eclectic variety of skills from patient care to Omnic basecode. He also got to know the Omnics who acted as day to day caretakers for Flint's aging community, including helping them to better understand the humans they cared for. These skills even translated into internships with Omnica's Healthcare wing, and a potentially bright future. Unfortunately, Omnica shut down before TC could graduate, its corporate malfeasance revealed to a shocked world (although his father had suspected as much from the latest Omnics coming into the wards). TC, seeing what the loss of Omnic assistance would do to Flint, changed course and took a degree in social work.

With his new found calling, he kept both the elderly members of the community and Omnics functional, comfortable, and most importantly, engaged. Knowing Omnica wouldn't fix the aging Omnic frames he acted as a mobile repair shop, keeping the Omnics from having to scavenge for parts or purchase black market materials to stay together. For outreach, he became famous for his community programs, including the infamous "Tag the Block" parties where Omnics and Humans alike cleaned neighborhoods and then painted murals over them. At its height, TC's programs turned the old Omnium into a massive museum and living space, housing the history of Human-Omnic potential. Instead of manufacturing facilities, it became a monument to what TC hoped could be a better future.

And then the Omnic Crisis erupted. Miraculously, Flint's Omnics declined to take part, having grown deeply intertwined in their community, but the same wasn't true for humanity. As the battle lines were pushed back, soldiers ignored the resident's pleas and executed any Omnics found in their path. Pushed aside by both grunts and Overwatch agents, TC looked on in horror as both his and his family's legacy was scattered and burned to the ground. Still, not all was lost. Those Omnics who weren't in the Omnium or on the street were sheltered by the humans around them. TC, using the excuse of visiting his patients, gathered up the survivors and fled.

The upper peninsula, an undeveloped park at that time, became home to the refugees. Members of TC's old program journeyed north too, acting as cover for the Omnics as TC helped to repair them. He took secret trips to Flint, scavenging for parts or looking for Omnics who could be rebuilt. After the Crisis, and knowing that discovery was inevitable, he took it on himself to become an ambassador to humanity. Although his calls for peace between humans and Omnics fell on mostly deaf ears, he did manage to learn of other movements like his, including the Shambali. When one of their monks joined him back in Michigan, the monk was shocked to see the Omnics there had developed likes and dislikes, a joy in small conversation, and the beauty of creation. These "human" traits, hadn't come from labor and enlightenment, but from learning from human interaction. In a revelation himself, TC found that the Omnics of the world needed someone who understood how they evolved, and dedicated himself to helping both humans and omnics to rediscover what it meant to be alive.

With Mondatta's assassination, he also knew no Omnic or advocate was safe, and so, in a unique partnership, he and his Omnics built "The Emissary," a strength augmenting rig that could act as both a shield for himself and those he cherished.

So, there's one potential backstory for TC. For that, I'd make him aged (around Ana's age, or a bit younger), and probably designed around support.

That's my take though...what are your thoughts, and when we get enough, we'll vote on one to build into a proper character.

Sorry for the poor quality. I threw it together and I'm not exactly in the best mindset to sit and write out something more cohesive at the moment.

I don't know how much it really takes from Terry Crews acting personas, because I've not really been familiar with him, but I took from several aspects of his life for inspiration rather directly.

Quote:
Terrance "The Breaker" Cruiz was a young boy in Flint Michigan sometime after the Omnic Crisis ended. Raised by his mother in a Christian household, he was instilled with a great sense of treating others how you'd like to be treated. Blessed with a keen eye for art despite his impoverished upbringing, Cruiz was accepted out of high school into a prestigious Art Academy on scholarship and quickly became a pioneering force in adapting radically new and untested Hard-Light technologies into new and exciting forms of expression.

Greatly unsettled by the worlds discord between humanity and omnics, Cruiz wanted to use his new methods to paint a grand tapestry of peace and harmony between the two groups and showcase it to all who could come. His goal was to create a piece that defied not only visual limitations, but also physical and audbile ones, enabling those from all walks of life to be able to understand and embrace his desired message of peace.

Furthering his already impressive pioneering in his niche field, Terrance developed a unique method that could lend his hard light creations a semblance of free movement and visual fidelity that created an almost lifelike expression of his views.

His Academy graciously offered to host the promising young artists event (even going so far as to have his mother attend as a guest of honor) despite much controversy over it's questionable message. Unfortunately, on opening night a group of radical Omnic fundamentalists attacked the Academy, causing TC to use his art in ways he never intended, defending the populace who came to celebrate his message and those who peacefully protested alike. Using his hardlight creations, he was able to help hold off the Omnic group and protect enough people until help had arrived.

Unfortunately, however, the attack of the Omnics left the Academy destroyed, and his mother dead. Instead of succumbing to his grief, he made a renewed vow to use his art to spread peace and fight hatred in a way that only he could, casting an Oath to break the molds of hatred and bigotry with art and beauty and courage instead of ugly violence.

- I picture him maybe a bit older than Lucio, sort of this legendary activist figure who participated in riots and peacekeeping methods alike in attempts to keep the peace, and when that failed, keep damage and loss of life to a minimum.

-Roll wise, I think he would be closer to a Defense/Support hero, with a capability to dish out significant damage if needed. In keeping with his nickname, he's a bit of a mold breaker, able to fill multiple rolls to some degree, though obviously that would take some tinkering.

Quote:
Theodore Carter was one of the many Brooklyn citizens displaced by the Omnic Crisis. Forced from his home at a young age, Theodore often directed his energies towards building and finding temporary shelters for his friends and family as they kept on the move, away from the ever expanding battlefields. More than once, his keen eye for picking out the safest buildings for refuge made the difference between shelter, or being buried under collapsing rubble as the war caught up with the fleeing citizens. Theo found an unexpected love of building and architecture as he worked to keep other survivors warm and safe amid the destruction, but often found himself wanting more materials and better tools.

As the Crisis came to an end, Theodore applied for loans to launch his own construction business to aid in rebuilding the cities that had been destroyed, bridging the gap between humans and omnics by accepting workers and technology from all avenues, his efforts turned what had once been inner city ruins into bright new spaces, safe, sturdy, and comfortable for their returning residents to relax in and settle back into their lives.

Soon enough, Tough Crews Inc was famous for its quick and high quality construction, charitably rebuilding areas all across north america using the funds earned from constructing buildings for larger businesses and government infrastructure. Soon enough orders vastly outstripped the company's capacity to fill them. Desperate not to let down the millions still without homes, Theo came up with a brilliant solution, and worked with his engineering team to make the vision a reality. Workers would be outfitted with newly designed construction suits which combined numerous pieces of equipment into one, allowing them to deploy without the use of enormous construction vehicles, demolishing, constructing, and even painting all at once.

While touring the engineering laboratories to review the latest suit designs, Theodore's facilities were attacked by a team of Talon agents, seeking to steal the invention and kill several former Overwatch agents that had become employed amongst Theo's staff.

Though his security team was quickly overwhelmed, Theodore managed to make it into the prototype defensive suit and used a mix of its quick-drying cement and paint sprayers to make cover and allow his staff to escape, before applying its demolition equipment to drive off the assailants.

Realizing that Talon seeks to recreate the horror of the crisis, Theodore has expanded his company's security division, and often personally heads up defenses of civilian populations in unstable parts of the world, to ensure homes and lives are preserved amidst the chaos Talon brings.

Quick update to the few, proud, and properly greedy creators out there. Contest entries/updates end August 19th, with judging ending the 26th.

Put your backbone's into it folks, free loot doesn't come every day.

Given the fact we have only two entries, one "held post," and zero discussion on any of them, we're extending the contest...by a lot. New deadline for submissions and discussion is October 31st, with a week thereafter for judging.

The bounty is now a flat $50 for each of the top three submissions. If you want merch that's under $50, we'll make up the difference in gift cards, or you can just get all $50 in gift cards.

If no new entries are added in the next month, I'm outsourcing this mother to Reddit, which means a lot more competition and a far smaller chance you'll get loot.

Put your pecks into it folks.
