Yes, but the Invisible Hand of Capitalism must at all times be venerated as America's eternal Christ and never vilified for operating as intended.

ESPN is owned by Disney and Disney is a very liberal company.

As a money- and brand-first company, Disney is only liberal (or conservative) when convenient for them and their bottom line. They still drive by and are propelled by capitalistic forces.

Do you guys really think nobody would take a screenshot of the guy talking with an ESPN overlay stating his name and something identifying Charlottesville somewhere in the shot, and crack dumb jokes about it?

Disney is a liberal company? Did they start adding gay characters for their liberal agenda, or is this going to be a reference to their racist cartoons in the past?

Disney can be very conservative (looking at many of the ways they run their parks), but they very much do like to toe the line on progressive issues that are not always the best move economically. This is one of the cases where their progressive motives obviously won over anything else as some guy with the name Robert Lee clearly isn't the same thing as Robert E. Lee. It'd be like pulling someone off the air for being named Richard Cheney. Lee and Cheney aren't uncommon names.

Because he goes to John McCain's state and says things like:
"One vote away. One vote away. We were one vote away. Think of it, seven years the Republicans -- and again, you have some great senators, but we were one vote away from repealing it
...
But, you know, they all said, Mr. President, your speech was so good last night, please, please, Mr. President don't mention any names. So I won't. I won't. No I won't vote -- one vote away, I will not mention any names. Very presidential, isn't' it? Very presidential. And nobody wants me to talk about your other senator, who's weak on borders, weak on crime, so I won't talk about him." (emphasis mine)
He's celebrating the fact that McCain's illness is likely terminal.

I think this was likelier an internal ESPN executive decision and not a Disney decision.

Edit: An article on the Atlantic talking about the Robert Lee decision and the backlash.
Quote:
It’s also true that no one wanted Robert Lee not to call the Virginia game. Late Tuesday night, the journalist Yashar Ali shared a clarifying email from an unnamed ESPN executive that pushed back against this narrative, “This wasn’t about offending anyone. It was about the reasonable possibility that his name would be subjected to memes and jokes and who knows what else … No politically correct efforts. No race issues. Just trying to be supportive of a young guy who felt it best to avoid the potential zoo.”

So it’s not another example of PC culture run amok. It’s an example of people who want to see PC culture run amok.

I mean.... Only in the sense that people are seeing things that arent there.

With that being said, I dont think its at all unreasonable for him to step away from the memes. I DO however think that he made it worse for himself.

It's always better to embrace the memes.

We had two Presidential candidates, both equally shitty and gross. One embraced the memes, the other went to war against them.

Guess which one became our President?

He was not the principle agent for this decision, but, rather, an ESPN executive.

Possibly. We'll never really know what happened because of the backlash and how silly the whole thing was.

As silly as the ACLU freaking out and having to explain itself because it dared use a white blonde baby in a tweet?

"There's a perfectly reasonable explanation that doesn't fit the narrative I've been taught to believe, so clearly that can't be the real story."

The point being that normally you'd avoid what you hate/dislike, instead of obsessing over it.

I suppose seeing something on the news constitutes obsessive behaviour, eh? When you see a problem you point out the absurdity, it doesn't mean you go out looking for it, does it?

You have to watch the news outlets that have an agenda to push by drumming up controversy over this. I've run into like a dozen people that think the guy was straight-up fired.

That's sillier. But, it shows some true colors.
