Yeah but never to claim territory that'd be meaningfully occupied.

I mean don't get me wrong it'd be awesome, I just doubt it'll happen.

In Cataclysm it was during the end-times, which is an apocalyptic future. I wouldn't say it really constitutes as checking up on what's currently going on there.

As to our Legion excursions to the north, those have been great. But I'd like to see new storylines play out there, and us staying there for longer than five minutes at a time. There's always a story about the Nerubians reclaiming their homelands after the fall of the Lich King to be told. We've seen with Deepholm that vast underground zones are feasible, so let's have an Old Nerubian Kingdom zone.

The Deaths of Chromie quests are sending us back to Dragonblight at least. Evidently random Scourge attacks are still an occasional thing at the Ruby Dragonshrine, suggesting there are roving packs of undead in Northrend that Bolvar can't keep locked down or just recall to Icecrown, whether because they're uncontrolled or dominated by leftover Scourge lieutenants. The former of which fits with all of those feral ghouls DK players encounter on the glaciers north of the continent during the class mount quests.

Presumably Bolvar can't maintain a hold on all of the Scourge's undead, so a fair number of them are either meandering around randomly attacking anyone they come across or being scooped up by other agencies like the lich that players fight in the Ruby Dragonshrine or the dreadlord who's operating out of the Obsidian shrine.

Who knows. Behind the scenes, Stromgarde got turned into a Forsaken paradise for quite a while before Galen dun goofed it.

It would be nice if we found out that the Darkspear were attempting to resettle the place even if it were just in an instance.

Going back to the Darkspear, it would be nice if we get an instance in Zul'Gurub where emissaries are trying to prop up the locals to join the Horde.

Lumber (War3)

Jungle should continue overtaking the land formerly known as Desolace. Unaware of the spores they were carrying, tauren druids returning from AU Draenor brought the Primals to Azeroth, who eagerly latched onto the unnatural jungles of Desolace!

Dragon Soul didn't take place in the future though, even if you can only access it through the Caverns of Time.

Well that sure as hell is confusing, isn't it?

So you're saying that, by the end of Cataclysm, there were two (more?) massive gaping sarlacc-pit monsters with sprawling tentacles and spikes invading Dragonblight? Like in present day times (relative to the expansion's timeline, that is)? That'd spell disaster for the geography of the zone, what with the two gaping holes and the Old God-minion corpses littered about. I don't think I want to return there anymore...

There should be minor capitals all over the place, allowing you to use the auction house and set your hearth there. ZG would be a good Troll capital and Stromgarde would make a good human capital. And put vendors there for specific items. The goal should be to make the world feel more alive.

Plaguelands should be destroyed again following the political fallout of the Death Knights/Paladin clash. Alternately a strain of the plague running amok after it is not carefully administered by the Cult of the Damned melting the whole landscape down to even less amiable fungus woods. Instead of only wildlife infected and dangerous and some undead plants might get up every moment to swallow people or structures.

As a bonus Andorhal just gets consumed right away making the war for control completely pointless.

Hillsbrad should run out of control as well with the tries to cleanse Southshore just leading to angry slimes destroying the whole coast and making any conquest worthless. Since Dalaran was founded at a conflux of leylines and Forsaken not really paying that empty space that much attention the Ogres of Alterac should be able to claim the crater and become a serious threat subjecting all of Lordaeron to devastating magical assaults.

In Quel'thalas the war between Amani and Blood Elves could escalate with Amani being supplied by the Zandalari with blood magic and dinosaurs and animate the Ghostlands to let fighting trees destroy the blood elf settlements and stop their recolonisation of the zone while the Naga invade Quel'Danas and Eversong.

In Duskwood after one Lich is now destroyed the Embalmer could now be the next with his wife returning from vanilla as his phylaktery and possibly a world boss.

If I had to revamp the entirety of Azeroth. I would reshape it to match its Warcraft 3 and Town Hall map appearance. Azeroth will be 10x larger than it is in its current incantation, with zones feeling more lively, fluid and radiant. Almost perfectly matching its in-lore scale. Goldshire would be portrayed as an actual Village as it was in the Alpha.

-Darker nights for sure.

Eastern Kingdoms would be clearly altered. Going back to Vanilla:

-Lordaeron would be mostly Scourged. From Sunwell Plateau to the Thandol Span and Greymane wall. More larger Scourge threat would be seen at the beginning of the game, while the Forsaken would act as the initial rebellion foil in Loraderon with the Silver Hand Remnants.

-The Scarlet Crusade still exists, and is allied loosely with the Alliance. Tensions begin to build up through the course of expansion packs.

-Northeron will be present in the initial game, with a three way war between the Wildhammer, Dragonmaw and Dark Iron Dwarves. Northeron is under constant threat of the Dark Iron who serve Ragnaros and Dagran, who constantly seek to melt much of the glacier of the Wildhammer homeland. The Dragonmaw war with both over land. They are allied with the Horde.

-Larger Dark Iron presence in great Khaz Modan and Redridge, as Dagran seeks to push imperialistic goals against both Ironforge and Stormwind.

-Dark Iron and Blackrock are "allied" as well. Only after Rend is slain by heroes of the Alliance. The Dark Iron swiftly push back the Alliance forces and assumes control over the leaderless Blackrocks. Causing splinters which leads a faction to join Thrall's Horde.

-Duskwood revolves heavily around the Lich, Ambrose and encroaching Gurubashi invaders from Stranglethorn.

Kalimdor:

-Theramore is a large bustling mercantile city that homes on an Island just off of Dustwallow Marsh.

-Teldrassil is portrayed properly with the Island of Kalidar below able to visited. It is home to a Night Elf Town, Children of Cenarius and Furbolg. The major Night Elf settlement would be Rut'theran Village of course.

-Azshara is populated by Night Elves, and is a major focus in the game revolving around the destroyed Night Elf empire.

What the night elves (and trolls) definitely need is more focus on their Wild God/Loa and fey allies.

The one and only strong narrative focus after the faction war would be a naga incursion but Teldrassil is the most protected zone in the entire game. A political storyline is dead with Staghelm. No idea if it would be possible to remove Teldrassil and add a North Coast Zone above Darkshore, Winterspring and Moonglade with a more exposed capital which likewise would making it more interesting as a hub.

I would further divide Ashenvale and add a bit of unused terrain to it making Coastal Ashenvale + the unused Stonetalon Coast a Night Elven exclusive zone as claimed after Siege of Ogrimmar. The rest of Ashenvale could receive a bit more depth with a tunnel system with more Old God focus.

Remove neutral factions, Goblins and Worgen from Felwood and make it a more direct clash between Tauren and Night Elves to differ between their viewpoints. Never understood why Night Elves are not enraged by Tauren claiming Elune just being one of the eyes of the Earthmother. A zealot's war around a for other races trival point could well carry and entire zone storyline though not much more.

Likewise I would like to remove the too neutral focus of Winterspring but the zone layout makes that more difficult. Donovah could use a flight path at her camp.

The way I see it, before the Scourgewar we have:

Scarlet Crusade, Argent Dawn (which has a subsect called the Brotherhood of the Light), Order of the Blood Knights, Stormwind Chapter of the Silver Hand and Khaz Modan Chapter of the Silver Hand (both of which were unaffected by the Third War).

Then, Tirion officially merges the Stormwind and Khaz Modan chapters of the Silver Hand with the Argent Dawn to form the Argent Crusade.

Then, the Order of the Silver Hand is reformed containing:

The Argent Crusade, Order of the Blood Knights, Order of the Sunwalkers and the Hand of Argus.

I actually think, that destruction of Teldrassil can be a good point to push the development.
  • Outdated ugly model is gone
  • World Trees project is failed
  • Malfurion go away to do save the world stuff; Tyranda become more proactive leader
  • Xenophobic sentiments are growing, since elves can't find new safe home on "their" Kalimdor; new leaders rise to opposite Tyranda
  • Attempts to reclaim their lands

I'd go further and have Tyrande die towards the end of Legion, leaving Shandris as the leader of the Sentinels and leading towards a militarization of the Kaldorei and attempt to completely reclaim northern Kalimdor (with Teldrassil ruined as you suggest).

I think the Night Elves need more leaders and minor major characters*. Killing Tyrande, Malfurion, and Illidan would lend to this some. Staghelm was interesting in that he opposed Malfurion.

*Minor major meaning that they're in the spot light and have quests but they are not leaders or anything of the sort. Think Nazgrim, Taylor, Thiselee Crow.

Why should kill everyone? Malfurion is netrual af, he should be in Khadgar-like role. Tyranda can be good pro-alliance political leader.

Illidan, eh? He's not NElf character.

I'm sure that they haven't known what to do with Tyrande for awhile. She and Malfurion were really setback by Illidan dying so soon (losing a key player in their dynamic). Fandral was never the same until he went Raid Boss. With the ultimate insult being a Ceslestial saying Tyrande is totally worse than Varian as a leader.

So yeah, let her die already. Throw Malfurion in there with her and declare Illidan to be the Redeemed Emperor of all Night Elves.

Malfurion's overinvestment in the Dream over the waking world is what makes him uninteresting.

Q: Now, what if Malfurion was just the Alliance's advocate for the Dream, while Hamuul was the advocate for the Horde?

A: Extending the faction conflict to management of the Dream leads logically into going INTO the Dream to enact the faction conflict there. There's no way to deliver on the fantasy of the Emerald Dream as a purely natural world untouched by civilization if it gets turned into another landscape we just destroy with mundane warfare. And we've really done that dance already with the Jade Forest.

Q: So you're saying that having Malfurion be the player's advocate for the Dream regardless of faction is a function of marginalizing the Dream as content?

A: I'd say the delivery of the Emerald Nightmare as a raid instance, and Malfurion's heavy involvement in it and Val'sharah's lead-in questing, answers that question handily.
