Default Hearthstone comics and their canonicity?

So in the leadup to this new expac, Blizz releasaed a trio of comics that are clearly "stories within stories", with the first one even having the narrator being told his lore is innaccurate (also, WTF is up with the character designs in these comics? What the hell are those blue and red humanoids?)

I know Blizz is kind of sort of running Hearthstone independently of Warcraft, internally it's its own game rather than a "Warcraft spinoff", but these comics were still written by CDev and presumably went through a lore check.

My biggest question is; how well-known to the common folk are these stories that are being told and subverted are? Why the hell is a short night elf dressed like a human jester? Are shadow ascendants canon now for the first time since the RPGs were discarded?

Why would you do this to yourself?

This goes beyond Masochism.

Dave Kosak is working for Hearthstone now, so hopefully that means he at least is trying to keep things at least sort of canon in stuff like this. Unless the whole reason he went to the Hearthstone team was to have the ability to write whatever silly stuff he wanted without concern for the lore...

You mean like his webcomics? I am fairly certain you are on to something.

You're describing everything he did during Cataclysm.

Not everything, I believe he was responsible for the Forsaken leveling quests. Sylvanas bias notwithstanding, they are pretty good quests, some of the best in Cata when looked at on their own merits.

Better question. Why does the Shadow Ascendant card look so different from the one in the comics? I was hoping for some cool new art.
