Tome of Knowledge The American Education System Thread

So, separate from the general politics thread, I wanted to make a place to talk about the way the American Education system is failing many of our citizens and steps that can be taken to improve it on the local level.

I predict this thread will get as bogged down as the others.

Here's my simple version: raise academic expectations for students and schools, which includes the creation of rigorously enforced exit exams. You shouldn't go up a grade unless you have appropriate reading, writing and math skills.

De-emphasize college education. It's not necessary for everyone. Employers should not expect employees to have degrees, unless said degree is directly relevant for the job. Raising standards in K-12 schools means colleges won't have to dumb down their courses.

Add programming and foreign language instruction in elementary school. Reduce elementary-level arts and crafts (or at least make such activities relevant to an academic subject—art is important, but it dominates too much of the elementary curriculum), and start teaching history at an early age. If there are first graders reciting songs from Hamilton, they're smart enough to start learning about the American Revolution.

All instruction should be in English, or be done with the goal of creating fluency in English.

Charter schools are fine, though they should be held to rigorous standards and closely examined. Some for-profit colleges are scams, so charter schools shouldn't be allowed to go the same way.

Orb of Lightning

I'm pretty sure we have this one already.

So, if privatizing is the way to go for education, I'd like to know which schools our right-wing users go or went to and why. I have a feeling none of them go to fine for-profit schools like DeVry, AMU/APU, etc. I know PJ goes to Purdue, which is most definitely a public school. I'd ask her why the hypocrisy myself, but I cannot.

The STEM politician movement may be gaining steam with 17 candidates winning this month.

Hopefully this starts a trend of people who value education getting into higher positions.

Braindead Betsy strikes out again.

The pyramid scheming cunt needs to go.

Also, friendly reminder that her evil voucher scheme doesn't work (unless by "work" you mean "funnels taxpayer money into the wallets of corporations").
