So the Warlocks are Alpha Shamans, interesting.

It's really sad that so many cool models weren't left in the game, in the editor at least. Would be very useful. Especially the trees and other doodads (Bleeding Hollow Flags!).

I always liked the way that Rob Pardo presents things.

A lot less `TERRIBLE TERRIBLE DAMAGE` than Browder, and a lot less snooty arrogance than Kaplan but he always sounds knowledgeable and makes it seem pretty exciting.

Looking at all of those old previews and interviews (including those in the old magazines I own) while reading the books from the era between Warcraft II and III (particularly Of Blood and Honor and Day of the Dragon) always makes me wonder about one thing. What were the very first drafts of the Warcraft III story looking like?

I mean, there are so many differences when looking at the old material. First of all, timeline. Not only did Of Blood and Honor imply far larger Second War (12 years), but it also implied far longer gap between Warcraft II and III (up to 30 years). This even goes in line with one of the previews from 1999/2000, which tells us of three decades of peace and human nations being at brink of civil war, as well as with intro of Warcraft III itself, which speaks about orcs and humans fighting for generations. I always thought they changed this when they decided to make World of Warcraft a direct continuation of the RTS games and use its characters and plot lines, instead of something happening after 100 years.

Second, the story itself. Not only was Garona meant to be involved and Burning Legion was meant to be its own playable faction with its own campaign, but human (Alliance) story was implied to be far more about politics, possible civil war and other nations apart from Lordaeron and Dalaran.

I think there was a flying Farseer in there too, on one of the Wyvern's.

I bet they would've gotten a lot of the Scourge campaign stuff.

That is, unless we know otherwise.

According to the old version of Warcraft 3's official section the Dreadlords, or at least a split-off of them were infected by the Scourge's plague. Which led to them serving Ner'zhul with Kil'jaeden in the dark about that.

Dread Lords are incredibly powerful demonic entities that are masters of darkness and mental domination. These cunning, malefic beings were once considered to be the most trusted lieutenants of the Burning Legion. Yet Kil'jaeden, the Lord of the Legion, tasked his faithful Dread Lords to watch over the Lich King Ner'zhul, and ensure that he carried out his orders to sew chaos in the mortal world. The Dread Lords carried out their task flawlessly, yet over time they fell under the influence of Ner'zhul's undead plague. Now, unbeknownst to Kil'jaeden and his Legion, the Dread Lords serve the Lich King and live only to carry out his dark agenda. Dread Lords generally appear as dashing human males and are adept at charming and beguiling mortal creatures through telepathy. Dread Lords radiate darkness around them and are fond of travelling within shadows.
Ultimate: Dark Summoning
The ultimate spell for the Dread Lord allows for him to summon his troops from afar to his side.

Removed Human Hero - Ranger
Quote:
These fearless Half-Elven women are masters of survival and wilderness exploration. Trained to hunt down renegade Orcs and Trolls in the wildlands of both Azeroth and Lordaeron, the Rangers are a force to be reckoned with. Being Half-Elven, the Rangers are often avoided by members of the High Elven stock. However, these crafty females make their home in the wilds and seldom feel the need for the distractions of camaraderie. Rangers are expert marksmen with the longbow and carry specially weighted bows and magically enhanced arrows.

I think goblins were intended to be playable as well.

Sentinel
Quote:
Sentinels are the leaders of the Sentinel army. These powerful warriors draw their strength from the moon goddess, Elune, and show little compassion or mercy to those who would disrupt the natural harmony of the Night Elves' proud culture. Sentinels are fond of using owls as scouts and are able to maintain a primitive telepathic rapport with their owls. Through this link, the Sentinels are able to see far across any environment as if they were looking through their owl's eyes. Sentinels are strong and swift, but unlike most Night Elf warriors, they wear sturdy suits of light armor. Like all Night Elf women, Sentinels are able to Shadowmeld at night.

Affirmative. They were the sixth playable race, the one that got cut first. Formerly, Undermine was even shown as a quite prominent place in the early Warcraft III map, almost as large as Northrend.

All the more reason why I crave to know what were those first story drafts looking like.

Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon

I have a soft-spot in my heart for Alpha/Beta Warcraft 3 (some of my best/favorite ideas come from there); like chenille-soft. Really more like a cardiac fontanel. I'm taking medication.

It was actually a giant Owl

Nerubians are very unique to Warcraft, but I still would've liked to see that 'Drider' in the game.

Maybe it could've become a hero, something like Heroes' Spider Queen

Psssttt...
http://www.scrollsoflore.com/gallery/index.php?cat=5

This is like, literally every screenshot ever released for the game. (I was pretty meticulous )

Also interesting reading:
http://www.scrollsoflore.com/gallery/index.php?cat=10

Anything with more than 1 file has all the pages scanned. I still have these magazines, I should scan them all some day. I um, kind of also bought every magazine that had a preview of the game

Highly recommend the first PC Gamer preview (http://www.scrollsoflore.com/gallery...ls.php?album=7) and the PCXL preview (http://www.scrollsoflore.com/gallery...ls.php?album=8) for the coolest early-release stuff.

Too bad I didn't see this topic sooner I know all kinds of things I covered the game pretty thoroughly throughout pre-release

I used to have every video released of the game as well but lost them in a hard drive crash (lot of interesting shakey-cam e3 stuff )

So originally it was supposed to be Humans, Orcs, Night Elves, Undead, Legion and Goblins?

Weird.

Well, when you take a look at the former Warcraft III concept map, you will see Undermine as well, so it is pretty safe to assume that Goblins were supposed to be important in the story.

Oh and as Warcraft II veteran, I have to say that this map is so much superior to the actual Warcraft III world map, if only because it retains the Warcraft II shape of Azeroth (aka the Eastern Kingdoms). I also like the second depiction of Kalimdor (the one in the bottom left corner).
