It's no wonder they kickass in gaming tournaments. I'm gonna tank heroics with that as my soundtrack tonight, and I expect to have triumph badges exploding from bosses on sight.

Indeed.

Fucking "nanananananana, nanana, nananana" from the first song, I can't get it out of my head xDDD.

Post more interesting stuff if you find it, please.

LOL... I'm seriously thinking of making that hook my new ringtone.

Now I just have to explain to my wife why I'm fascinated by the South Korean version of the Spice Girls.

So, here's why:

I can't understand a word they're saying, I have no idea who they are, and they're not dressed and acting like freakazoid prostitutes.

See, I like the music Lady Gaga makes, I just can't stand her as a person. She's the worst sort of attention whore imaginable, and on top of that, her lyrics scream "I WAS AN UGLY AND UNPOPULAR CHILD SO NOW I HATE MEN. HATE HATE HATE HATE THEM. IF YOU ARE A MAN LISTENING TO THIS AND YOU ARE NOT GAY, I AM LAUGHING AT YOU FOR GIVING ME MONEY BUT KNOW THAT I HATE YOU AND WISH YOU WOULD DIE."

The South Korean Spice Girls might be saying the same thing. I have no idea. They might all be talentless freaks and morons. I have no idea. All I see is a video of girls who are modestly dressed and well groomed dancing and singing and not saying anything objectionable.

Ignorance is bliss.

Bolvar 08-30-2010 04:34 PM

Ok... on a different note:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KT2ZrY0wcQ

Synopsis: From what I can tell, it's an asian pop starlet doing a Twilight-themed music video.

With Freddy Kruger backup dancers.

Which is brilliant. Because I might have watched Twilight if it had Freddy Kruger in it.

Bolvar 08-30-2010 04:55 PM

It's like the guy who does this mashup channel is my South Korean evil twin.

I give you.... Asian pop mashed up with audio from "Poker Face:"

/sigh

It's easier than hitting the "edit" button.

I'm really not spamming my own thread or anything. I'll be more concise in the future.

I don't know, I can't stand that music, nor those videos, nor (most) Korean chicks. Want some good Asian pop? Get some Susumu Hirasawa up in this bitch (even if he reminds me a lot of Satoshi Kon. *sniff*)

Not bad. I like the techno pop crap. It's a guilty pleasure. Take my man card, I don't care.

Today, I give you the Korean Janet Jackson:

Apparently, half the pop music in Korea these days is churned out by manufactured acts from this SM Entertainment company.

They're so American it brings a tear to my eye.

Here's your ringtone:

Yeah Lady Gaga for example has "changed" music but alot of her styles are very much Korean it anoyes me as she gets all of the credit, a majority of Korean singers just need to release there music Internationally and it would be a huge hit everywere but alot of Korea like to be quite exiled from everywere else which is odd as they are all known for loving everywere and are like the ultimate tourists.

Exxile87 09-02-2010 09:37 AM

I hate dance/pop, and this is dance/pop. I hate it. Glad you like it. But I hate it. Time for ear bleach. Lots and lots of ear bleach.

Not exactly accurate. Korean pop stars do release their work internationally, but the majority of their fan base remains with their Asian neighbors, Japan and China. Japan has a huge pop market that still favors its own talent, but they eat up Korean pop media all the same.

The language barrier is tougher to break than you think. While we have a few people who posted in this thread that enjoy these Korean artists, there are probably a hundred people in the US to every one of them that will listen to it and the first thing that will come out of their mouth is "I don't know what they're saying".

If there is a market to be tapped, you can be sure that record labels will try to cater to it. There have been lots of Japanese artists, for example, who have attempted to produce English language works in the style of music that made them popular in Japan and have failed to make an impact. It's just really hard to break into an international market without the right combination of luck, timing, and artistic foresight. The foresight part is especially difficult if you're not "native" to the population.

The other option is to have a ridiculous amount of talent and enough money/prominent record label to be able to tout your image enough for people to adore you no matter where you go, like early 90s Michael Jackson.

Bolvar 09-02-2010 10:49 AM

From what I've read, SM Entertainment has had modest success in the US with a few of their acts. The links I provided to BoA are examples of their english-version dance tracks that got a little airplay here.

These guys aren't stupid - they got big by marketing their stuff to Japan, and they will eventually crack the American and European markets.

However, even the artists their acknowledge that their influences are American acts. Not the other way around. Just because Lady Gaga rips off Madonna and every other pop starlet that came before her doesn't mean her crap is mutant Korean trash. It's mutant American trash. I like the Korean stuff a lot better.

Rashid 09-02-2010 11:25 AM

Yep, BoA is a huge superstar in Asia, but so far has had very little attention here. Same with Utada Hikaru, who doesn't really do dance stuff, but she's a very talented singer. Speaks fluent English too, so it's really just a misunderstanding of the market that kept her from doing well more than once. Enjoys moderate success in the video game market though :P

It's only a matter of time, I think. American Pop music is like a wasteland... a wasteland with a giant pit... that has been used as a landfill... and a sewage treatment plant...
