Fan-Fiction Campfire Thread

The old thread seems to have gone missing, so we'll have to use this thread in the meantime for all of you fan-fiction socializing and general discussion needs.

I'll light the campfire with a flamethrower :D

I'm thinking of writing the rest of that Omnicon I mentioned in the Project 3 thread. Anyone have any particular ideas for races they'd like our intrepid castaway to run into in his adventures through the Nether?

I wrote 4 long fanfic now and translated 3 of them, now I plan to write another TCW one about Bo-Katan.

Jungleluke 01-29-2013 12:13 PM

I think I will write one about a Worgen and an Orc who's the prisoner-of-war of the Worgen. Some cool conversations and dialogues and stuff.

Anansi 01-29-2013 12:29 PM

Grackle still has to write that choose-your-own-adventure about the sultry Alterac peasant with dreams of Presidency.

At last something will rise that will shake the nepotistic Alliance monarchies to their core! And give them lots of loving, in so doing.

I'm not actively working on the travelogue at the moment (trying to finish an original short story and hopefully publish it), but I have enough backlogged material to last at least until August.

I actually finished "THE RHONIN-ING :rhonin: " about 4 months ago but i've been lazy about editing it, i'll do it some day.

Thinking of writing something about a group of horde adventurers, and their adventures across Azeroth, in something similar to an old 1920's serial.

BaronGrackle 01-31-2013 07:56 AM

I have a couple of questions, unrelated to anything.

1) Was Andorhal and/or Durnholde Keep a part of Alterac, before the Second War? Or is that all just Lordaeron, always and forever?

2) What's a good name for a merchant's hot daughter?

Like detectives?

1. Part of Lordaeron according to Terenas in RotLK.

2. Teresa

Your daughter is going to end up a stripper.

The current names I favor for my hypothetical daughters are Sofia, the goddess of wisdom in Gnosticism and the personification of wisdom in Christianity as well as Vesna which is the goddess of spring in Slavic mythology.

BaronGrackle 01-31-2013 07:20 PM

You bastards.

I should make you roll dice to determine her name...

Arashi 01-31-2013 10:23 PM

So aside from THE RHONIN'ING :rhonin: :raptor: :rhonin: :raptor:

i've also got a back log of about 13 stories about 1-2 years old that have to be edited because they're too damn long.

So, does anyone have tips for editing for length and general reasons?

You should start a thread for it, I think. :P

"Vesna" literally means "spring". It will be an awkward 'name' if you translate it into Russian, for example.

Luke, we had a specific quest here.

"a good name for a merchant's hot daughter?"

Now, any kind of human being can have any name, but we are dealing with literary devices here.

First we have the "merchant's daughter" quota. That means not using a weird, noble or convoluted name. Given that the main character is a peasant, it stands to a reason that a merchant family he would be dealing with is not a rich, Capital City-sort, but rather something local and self-sufficient. It's the classic small town bourgeoisie - haughty, wealthy, with very high esteem of itself, probably with a lot of cherish for his little girl.

Second, we have the "hot daughter" quota. Again, where does this kind of hotness drive her in a small town? She may be the haughty seductress, using her looks and societal position (as a merchant's daughter) to force the lustful peasants into working for her gain. OR she may be a "village bicycle", wasting her beauty in lustful embrace unknowingly to her father.

Thus we have to choose a name that could be used for any described situation. You can't have her name always be a cutesy one, or a holy one, or a high-society one, and you certainly wouldn't want a girl's name derived from a boy's here. Given that your audience is likely anglophone, it is unwise to use a name they wouldn't be familiar with, like a Slavic name, or a made-up fantasy name - you will simply ruin the image of a generic town merchant's daughter for them!

I tried to use this justification when choosing Suzanna. To her father, she must be both "My dear Susan, a docile and dutiful lady of many virtues" that he introduces to potential rich matchmakers; but also "My beautiful little Suzie", a heartwarming character. To the townsfolk she may either appear as "That prideful Suzanna, spending her father's riches and infatuating all the young lads around, turning them into lovesick fools"; or, alternatively, as the promiscuous "Suzie the :raptor::raptor::raptor: dumpster, who's been under everyone I know". Finally, one of the meanings of "Suzanna" is "true beauty", which may both be a valid characteristic of her personality, and an ironic one.

Millenia 02-01-2013 06:47 AM

Recette! :D

BaronGrackle 02-01-2013 08:01 AM

Kir's answer is the longest and most ridiculously detail-oriented, so it wins. If this ever happens. So far, all I have are the different "Classes" you can start as. :P
