Star Wars (Movies/Cartoons/Comics/Etc.)

So, I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan, and with things like the Old Republic on the horizon I figured a thread might be in order.

Are there any non-Special Edition DVDs of the Original Trilogy I can buy? As a fan who vehemently opposes the special edition and has resorted to watching the original trilogy by way of old VHS tapes it'd be nice to have DVDs of it.

True story: my father had the original trilogy on laser disc (basically, in the 80s, they had DvDs that were the size of records).

HalfElfDragon 09-17-2011 08:00 PM

My school has a couple laserdisc players. The only thing they have for it is old science demo videos.

Volkrin 09-17-2011 08:04 PM

I think I might still have the original three on VHS somewhere in my house... I wonder how hard it would be to convert them to DVDs.

Slowpokeking 09-17-2011 08:07 PM

Yeah I like SW a lot.

I always wanted to sharpen the edges of a laserdisk and throw it like that thing Xena used.

I still have the original 3 on vhs somewhere but I have no idea how to convert them to dvd for you.

So, has anyone else here read Star Wars Legacy? It was a comic book that ran 50 issues (plus a six-issue sequel miniseries), just ended a couple months ago.

I absolutely loved it.

I got the first three issues and then stopped. I don't recall why exactly, maybe my local comic place stopped carrying it.

Hated it so much. You have no idea. I read it start to finish hoping it'd improve, and all I got at the end was giant, Lucas-shaped "Fuck you, I like money!"

I don't like the "there must always be a Skywalker" thing the Star Wars EU has going on. The original trilogy was just as much about Chewbacca as it was about Luke (probably a slight exaggeration).

Her Chakram?

Heh, loved Xena and Hercules as a kid. That was family night for me. Popcorn, Dad in his chair, Mom and sister on the couch, and I'd be in front of the T.V. laying on the floor next to our dog.

So, would you have liked it if he wasn't a Skywalker?

Who's your favorite SW novel writer? I will say Timothy Zahn and Matthew Stover.

Family night for me was any night where mom was conscious and daddy didn't decide to "kiss me with his belt".

O.o

I'm sorry to hear that.

I've not had experience with the novels. The only author I've actually read stuff by is Golden so I have to default to her.

The story wouldn't have been written at all like it was, so probably.

Sorry, but a leather-clad-emo-bondage-fetishist-not-Jedi with "issues" just irked me.

Speaking of which, is it weird when I was reading a news article about how a latex dominatrix's boyfriend died and immediately thought "hey, I think I've seen some of her porn!".

HalfElfDragon 09-17-2011 09:30 PM

It was strange, but on the surface Legacy looks like some rubbed the 90s comic books all over Star War, but to me when I was reading it it felt more true to the original trilogy than any other part of the EU, even more than the prequels.

It had the soul of the original trilogy, at least I think it did.

Can we at least all agree that Dark Empire sucked? Because it sucked. Whoever approved the idea of the Emperor having clones should be ashamed of it, let alone the guy that came up with it.

Only slightly. Only slightly.

You remind me of a girl in my highschool.

Me: "Man, I had a shitty night last night. I went home and found out my cat had been put to sleep."
Her: "My dad came home drunk and whipped me with an electrical cord."
Me: "Ok..."

My favorite piece of Star Wars EU that I've experienced is probably KOTOR 2. Unfinished state of the game aside, KOTOR 2's story intrigued me and took a unique and thought-provoking look at the nature of the Force. It transcended the Light-Dark paradigm Episodes I through VI laid out and which much of the Star Wars universe seems built on and made me question my own assumptions. The Exile may be my favorite Force-user, and the game's supporting cast was great too with Kreia deserving special recognition.

As for Star Wars novels, I've read the Darth Bane trilogy by Drew Karpyshyn. The first book is good, in my opinion, with the second and third installments still enjoyable but not at the same level as the first. The plots don't hold up quite as well to scrutiny, and Mr. Karpyshyn's matter of fact narrative style in these books isn't especially mesmerizing. Zannah's a fun character, though, and these books (the first and second more than the third) helped make her one of my favorite Sith Lords.

Exxile87 09-19-2011 08:26 PM

There's a Star Wars novel about a Sith Lord releasing a Darkside plague that turns people into zombies. I want this book.

Lucas has got to be the biggest film industry troll of all time

Ded Chikn 09-20-2011 03:18 AM

That doesn't get old.
