Lumber (War3) True Detective - Season 2

What Happened To The Shoes Edition

Discuss.

So, what did you think of the first episode? I went into this... skeptical. Season 1 started off extremely strong and then towards the end it almost just seemed to... fizzle out of steam? Like they didn't really know what to do with the story and hand-waved it as "MUH CHARACTER DRIVEN DRAMA". I was surprised how much I enjoyed this first episode actually. All of the characters seem pretty damn interesting actually, Colin Farrel was excellent as he always is. That being said, I thought him just beating up the dad AFTER he said he was with the police was kind of absurd. Wouldn't they go straight to the PD and tell them that the guy said he was a cop, with the exact description? I guess we'll have to see if it bites him in the arse.

Bloodlust

Those final five minutes of episode two - what was that?! Poor Colin, I didn't think they would kill someone like that so early.

He's def not dead. I'm guessing it was beanbags, rubber slug or some other nonlethal ammunition, or he was wearing a vest. Both shots were to the torso. In any case why hide your identity with a creepy symbolic bird mask if you were just gonna kill the guy?

My impressions on the show so far are overwhelmingly positive. This shit is like crack for me. They seem to be playing on the Greek tragedy allusions and connecting it to the dark noir-ish world of Southern California Eyes Wide Shut-style sex-drug-murder cults with twisted mythological undertones. One of the characters' names is actually Antigone (sister named Athena). After 2 episodes we get the impression she was probably a victim of abuse growing up on her dad's commune thing. There are weird Oedipus Rex incest vibes coming from Paul's mom. Ben Caspere the murder victim, has his eyes gouged out (albeit chemically). Could be another reference to the Oedipus trilogy where Oedipus gouges his own eyes out after finding out Jocasta is his mother. And finally, the singer who has been in the bar acts as the Chorus, setting the tone and breaking the fourth wall a bit. Her songs are so tonally on the nose, that it has to be more than just window dressing. She is an actual real-life singer-songwriter called Lera Lynn who is writing songs for the show. Presumably we'll be seeing much more of her.

The reason Ray doesn't get in trouble for beating a man up on his own lawn and threatening a 12 year old probably comes down to how corrupt the local PD is.

I've also noticed that all the main characters are dealing with some sort of sexual issue or dysfunction. Frank mentions he and his wife are trying IVF implying that one or both of them has problems conceiving children, it connects with Frank worrying about his legacy after he's gone. Ani is into some kind of weird shit in the bedroom that freaked out her boyfriend. He says something like "I didn't think a girl like you would be into that kind of thing" which gives me the vibe that it was some sort of submissive thing - choking, slapping, rape-play, etc. that would seem out of character. We later see her getting drunk and browsing porn. It seems very likely that Paul is in the closet gay. He can't get it up with his smoking babe of a girlfriend and has to pop a boner pill in the bathroom and take a 30 min shower to wait for it to kick in. Later he explains unsolicited that he almost clocked a "fag" for "trying to hit on" him in the line at the ATM. Also, some weird vibes from his mom. And I think it's implied that Ray is probably sterile. Some guy rapes his wife and she's suddenly pregnant after they'd been trying to conceive forever. Literal red-headed stepchild is the result.

Yeah it was a major WTF moment for me too but I'm with Saranus that he is probably not dead.

The start was good, I am intrigued by the characters. Also good stuff there Saranus I didn't catch all of that, will have to pay closer attention to the downer singer (it's like they imported her from Suicidlandia ). I think the opening song is also relevant, it's damn powerful either way.

And about them dropping the mithological elements, I am sad if they were coerced into dropping their artistic vision but not overly sad about that being cut.

Haven't caught this yet. I'll probably check it out once it's finished.

Lumber (War3)

I see you. Running through the trees. You're small but the trees are like giants. Men are chasing you. You step out the trees. You ain't that fast.

My son - they kill you. They shoot you to pieces.

I'm convinced this season's version of Carcosa is going to be inspired by Bohemian Grove. It was/is a men's club in California where extremely rich old dudes go to get drunk and indulge themselves. They even do mock-pagan rituals there. Its surrounded by nearly 3000 acres of tall redwood trees, so the forest surrounds everything. Total privacy for hedonism - I think this place is where the season is ending.

Yeah, the opening credits finish on a dense, dark forest after most of it has been dystopian industrial or desert landscapes.

But guys, didn't the producers say that the supernatural angle was cut?

Yeah was coming in just to comment on that, that is one of the best done shootout scenes in fiction (up there with the one from Heat imo). Obviously that means I like realistic scenes where a lot of ammo is used to little effect and lots of people die on both sides (though it is a minus how none of the 3 important chars died).

In my estimate 12-14 people died (7 of which cops) and 8-10 ppl are wounded but of those some might have died as well.

Continuing the references about Detective Ani Bezzerides having some kind of anal kink:

Ray: I don't know about Ventura, but you can't be that naive around here. If there's a buyout with the State Attorney, Mayor Chessani could make your ass part of the deal.
Ani: *rolls her eyes, turns away.*

Seems flimsy to me, at best. What was the other reference?

She looks up anal porn one episode, then in another scene she gets mad with friend-with-benefits for not wanting to do that in the bedroom. Obviously vestigial relics from some sexually abusive childhood.

Yeah I recall the porn bit but to me it seemed nondescript, I'll give it another look I guess.

My guess for why she and that dude had that conversation was some sort of domination play desire, but sure anal could work.

BUMPEDIT:

Gave it a look, she went from researching Cali hookers to a BDSM website, to some random porntube site and there she picked a DP scene... so yeah she is into some freaky stuff but I am betting the main thing is D/s. Though I gotta say this is one weird topic of conversation, at least on this site/context.

I also wonder if she was really abused as a kid, I mean there are some pointers but she doesn't let it on when talking to her dad. But maybe there will be a showdown down the line where she snaps at him and we hear more about it... or maybe not, because maybe it was just a weird commune, no pedo

Neither of those things is made explicit.

That shootout was very well done.

My one gripe was that the older detective served to seem no purpose in the show other than to have a recognisable non-redshirt die in the shootout.

Also, am I the only one who bets the mayor tipped off the Mexicans? If he's involved in setting up Casper's death and possibly knew the killers. At the very least, he was watching the briefing.

Invisibility

I'm sure that Birdman (or at least one of the people hiding behind those masks) is the set photographer from episode three. Birdman has a thing for cameras and voyeurism (e.g the video-camera in Caspere's place and then when the car is being burnt, he's just standing at the side of the road gawking.) And when Ray talks to him, the way that scene is shot we rarely see the set photographer's face and when we do, he looks away - like he's being evasive. Plus the fact that only Ray spoke to him -not him and Ani- because the director wanted to create a contrast between these two specific characters.

Also the similarities between the lawnmower man who was met around this time last season who seemed like he was just some random guy who was trying to be helpful, when actually he was one of the main culprits.

And look at the way he glares at Caspere's finance lady from the background! We're going to see more from this guy later on I think.

Human Icon (War3) Vinceposting - give it a go, its fun

What happened to the chicken who crossed the road? Nothing. It didn't, because I am that fucking road and no one crosses me.

You ever play with coloring-books as a kid, Ray? I did. My father hated it, but I never liked staying inside the lines.

I never lost my keys. Never even had a fucking keychain.

You know what they say about length, Ray? I do. But the girth's more important, Casper knew that. But nobody measures me up for size.

Vinceposting is my favourite new meme.

It was the set photographer! He took the pictures of those rich/powerful people at the lodge and is trying to blackmail them.

I can't wait for Vince's character to go full blown psychotic.

They've surely planted the seeds for his character to lose grip with reality, with the whole water-stained roof dealio.

Darkmoon Card: Maelstrom

Apparently when we get to see the lodge out in the woods, there's supposed to be a crazy continuous shot (like Rust raiding the crack house last season) of complete debauchery and hedonism. I'm talking dozens of professional pornography actresses according to what I read - so expect major boobage sometime soon.
