Default Mea Culpa - The Art of Self Balance

We are innately designed to think we are right. It's in every motion of our day, to assume that what we see, hear, think, and say is truth. By virtue of universal chance, our combined senses are better than all other species on earth...but they still have faults.

Mea Culpa is not about shame, though it can contain it. It's not about failure, although it may lead to it if applied incorrectly. Mea culpa is simply stating, I know I am at fault in some way, and to understand even the smallest of errors is to build a stronger sense of reality brick by brick.

So...what are you wrong about? The temperature of your coffee? How amazing the book you read was when you were 10? How terrible another was at 15? That you knew how to care for someone? That someone didn't care for you?

This is not the place for flagellation, self or otherwise, but to forgive yourself for ignoring a fault and accept new ways to their solutions. A purgatory of your own making that will lead to the enlightenment you seek, whether through your own mind's eye or the oversight of others.

Orb of Lightning

I don't really do the whole forgiveness thing.

Forgiveness is not about saying you feel no guilt, but knowing that the guilt does not need to weigh on your soul after fixing what you feel guilty about.

I feel guilty about buying a maple bacon donut yesterday, because it was a completely unnecessary purchase. It was also a delicious one-time experience which, while hardly justified, doesn't weigh on my soul (though it will on my ass until I exercise some restraint).

There are large or small faults we all have, solving them includes asking for and receiving forgiveness from multiple parties, including yourself.

I dont care enough about other people to give a shit what they think my flaws are, and I dont really care enough about myself to notice my own.

So, all in all, Im in a good place where I dont really have shit to ask forgivness for. At least from myself.

Again, fuck other people. They dont get a say in the matter.

I'm 42 years old and I could post more on this topic than I'd care to admit.

Stoic philosophy coupled with born-again Christianity has kind of allowed me to get over it.

It's great that you recognize your own original post as a shallow facade, it really is. But this type of sophomoric scheming is why everyone treats you as... less than you probably deserve to be treated.

I think you've said you managed people before, in real life. Did you treat each of them as "a small child"?

It's both. It's a chance to figure out one's own failures as well as redeem themselves. I added the "like a small child" part (99% as a joke) because I'm a naturally snarky asshole and my current round of dayquil is running out (so I couldn't resist).

That said, yes, mea culpa there. I should resist the urge to be an asshole when sick and hating the world of microbio.

I should say the real reason I posted this was that I finally watched the Zen episode of Samurai Jack and felt like it was pretty much the exact definition of what goes wrong with the Halls.

I haven't seen this show at all... I suppose I should look into it. Is it on NetFlix?

Seasons 1-4 are great for kids/young teens (or if you and your friends are toking up...ha...hahahaha...Bolvar toking up. Sorry, just got the mental image in my head). If you're watching it with them, go for it, otherwise it's more of a nostalgia thing for us Gen X/Y folks.

Do not show your kids season 5 until they're at least 12 (and birds/bees discussion has occurred). The decade long hiatus between 4 and 5 basically had the writing staff assume that relatively mature topics were completely on the table.

My kids are 12 and 13 and have helped birth goats and horses and such... they're probably OK.

I'll check it out - thanks!

I dunno, I was pretty rude to you on occasion a long while back, but we seem to get along pretty well now. Maybe you're more forgiving than you think.
