Orc Icon (War3)

But you know who has the best character depiction in those two novels? Rend Blackhand, bitches.

Advice for attacking Gul'dan's warlocks:

What will we do if they use magic against us?

Their magic is potent, and Gul'dan himself could easily kill three or four of us within minutes. But he needs those minutes. And he needs physical contact, or to be close by, or to have something that belongs to the intended victim. Did any of you loan the chief warlock a waterskin or a pair of gauntlets or a sharpening stone?

(laughter)

Then just steer clear of the warlocks until we are across, do not let them close to you, and swarm over them before they can cast any spells. Despite their powers they are still orcs, and they can still bleed and die. This is no different from hunting an ogre back home--each of them may be stronger than any one or even two of us but we can wear them down and attack in groups and prevent them from fighting back.

~ ~ ~

Meeting with Teron Gorefiend:

After two years where nothing happens, you come marching back up here, into my keep, a handful of fresh warriors trotting behind you, and you expect me to get all excited about kneeling before a withered old shaman? And by the way, I should also hand over not only my own warriors but my dragons as well? [/laugh] Not damn likely!

You must. We need your strength, and your dragons, to carry out our plan!

I don't care what you need. That's your problem, not mine. I don't give a damn about whatever old Ner'zhul might be planning. Where was he when we fought the Alliance? I was here. Where was he when Doomhammer fell? I was here!

Where was he when the portal was destroyed and we got stuck here? Where was he when we were hunted for two long years, and slowly rebuilt our forces to whatever orcs had survived and could make their way to us? I'll tell you where--he was safe and snug on Draenor, not lifting a finger to help!

But I was here! I pulled these orcs back together! I rebuilt the Horde, not over on Draenor but here on Azeroth, right beneath the Alliance's nose! I am warchief now, and no used-up old shaman is going to take that away from me!

[/grittingteeth] Please. Please, I ask you to reconsider. Without your aid, Ner'zhul will--

--fail. He's got no experience with real war. He's got no head for tactics, no understanding of combat, and no real leadership skills. The Alliance will crush his little pretend Horde, and then, I will pick up the pieces. We will gather all the survivors to us, Maim and I, just as we have been doing all along, since the last war ended.

Either

A) They wanted to give Lothar an honorable death.

or

B) They wanted Ogrim to be less of a jerk because how can someone as pure as Thrall ever idolize a cruel, honorless man like Ogrim?!

Combat raged all around him, but Doomhammer kept his own gaze fixed on his foe. He stalked forward, his hammer clearing space through the crush of bodies, not caring if he struck orc or human. All that mattered was reaching that man. The human was only slightly more careful, not actively striking any of his own people but expecting them to dodge his horse and his blows all the same.
Did Garrosh ever purposely cleave his way through his own soldiers, to reach Varian?

I never even thought of looking at it like that . Good for them, those poor persecuted chaps sure need it.

A) They could have given Lothar an honorable death without ruining Doomhammer.

B) Likely but all in all I don't think they succeded that much. He's barely any better than before the novels and I'm sure they could have made remade him with a balance between how he was in the games/LotC and how the novels made/tried to make him out to be. You don't have to be incompetent to be a semi good guy(and he's barely even that!).

Eh, Thrall. Sure, he's a hypocrite, but so's everyone else in the world.

I say Thrall since it was his Horde I grew into liking.

Don't really have a negative opinion about the other Warchiefs, save that some have been cartoon vilainized for quite some time.

Lothar got an honorable death back in WC3, the TOD novelization only continued it (and also made Orgrim crush the bones of his own allies to get to Lothar).

That's what Gul'dan wants you to think....

Blackhand was a puppet. He was pliable and that's what Gul'dan wanted. Let Blackhand be the public face while he did all of the really nasty stuff behind the scenes.

I don't see how can he be declared a puppet when their interests corresponded completely.

Because he wasn't calling the shots? I mean, a puppet doesn't need to know that it isn't in control.

And where was there an instance when Gul'dan called the shots behind his back?

Because, from what I see, people call Blackhand a puppet just because Orgrim said so.

Maim was actually okay with his brother being the commander.

All that remains now is a poll for the sexiest Warchief.

TaurenPaly will provide pictures of the contestants posing, oiled up and dressed only in speedos for jury consideration.

You and Kir both have a point. Gul'dan was calling the shots, but Blackhand wasn't just a doormat. Out of Blackhand and Gul'dan, who cared more about the Kingdom of Stormwind being attacked and conquered? Who cared more about Griselda being hunted down and killed? Who had the plan to try recruiting Forest Trolls? Since Blackhand didn't want anything that worked against Gul'dan, he was still calling all of the shots that Gul'dan didn't care about.

Notice that the Raiders are still a major presence in the First War, but Gul'dan works to get rid of them when Doomhammer takes over. Part of my headcanon is that the Raiders kind of knew what was going on, and they kept an eye open... giving the warlocks a little bit of pause. But if Gul'dan had tried to move against the Raiders, that was one of the lines Blackhand wouldn't cross. Can you imagine? A single element of the Horde in which Gul'dan had more power under Doomhammer, than he had under Blackhand!

The other part of my headcanon is that Kargath Bladefist and the other non-warlock Shadow Council members were left on Draenor on purpose, to guard against a secular-warrior coup in the Shadow Council leadership. You know, just to be safe.

Though his characterization kind of took a plunge in BtDP. In ToD, when Rend is giving orders to half of his men, Maim is giving identical orders to the other half. You can sort of get a picture of them as co-rulers, with Rend leading the dance.

In BtDP Maim is hunched by Rend's side. And at one point, Rend PETS him. Like a dog, or a mentally challenged family member.

EDIT:
