Default Overwatch trademarks (not) suspended

Just came across this on NeoGAF.

To quickly summarize, it seems that an Innovis Labs, Inc. filed a trademark for a game called Overwatch some time before Blizzard did, and Blizzard hasn't apparently tried to argue for their side at all, hence the suspension.

You can check out the thread for the nitty gritty.

So we may see a name change for this.

edit: Update some posts below, agreement reached between Blizzard and Innovis.

Ah that's not so bad, overwatch wasn't a great name to begin with.

Yeah, I wasn't big on the name myself, so I'm interested to see what it changes to. Bit surprised that they hadn't apparently opposed it though, would have figured they'd fight.

That's absolutely pathetic. They were that lazy and careless? They couldn't even be bothered to fight back against a trademark filing dispute?!

Why spend the money when changing the name is cheaper and easier?

But why register a trademark that another company already held in the first place?

They probably did a check and it got overlooked somehow.

So it was either laziness or incompetence.

MFW that actually sums up pretty much every bad decision Blizzard have made since WoW launched.

Pretty hard to care about a Blizzard game with no story or reason for the things happening in the game play to happen. Course given Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm and the decline of Warcraft... that's sort of the way we are going

The name "Overwatch" on it's own is pretty boring, but Blizzard already put a lot of effort into making a name for the game with it's reveal, as well as using the word 'Overwatch' fairly liberally in the CGI cinematic and other promotional materials. It would be kind of awkward to rename it now, though I could see them changing it to something like "Project Overwatch", if they could get away with some kind of variant like that.

Not sure what you're talking about. The cast is almost as diverse as it can get. I get the criticism about the lore (or lackthereof), but the art style is gorgeous and crisp.

I think its the bit where female characters are always humanoid and roughly the same hourglass figure whereas guys get to be gorillas, dwarflike people and in things that conceal their appearance

I do think the diversity of the cast so far is a nice step forward though

Small update, apparently some months ago Blizzard and Innovis reached an agreement that allows both to use Overwatch.

Quote:
Looking more closely... this was all settled months ago before this thread was even posted. They're going to both keep using Overwatch, for their respective products.

http://tsdr.uspto.gov/documentviewer...Index=3&page=1

Quote:
The amendment is necessary pursuant to a separate co-existence agreement entered into by the applicant and a third- party. The party has indicated an intent to challenge the description of goods/services as originally filed by the applicant, unless the applicant makes the proposed amendment to the category description. The proposed amendment is within the scope of the original filing, and includes discreet language modifications that will prevent customer confusion between the marks.
So, last summer, Blizzard challenged Innovis, and Innovis agreed to change its trademark description to carefully remove all references to games, as seen on that page.
So guess it'll remain Overwatch.

Pharrah doesn't.

EDIT: I'd also go so far as to say Tracer doesn't as well. She doesn't really have an exceptionally large bust, she just has that teleporter/time device thingie on her chest.

Is that still a ting?

I mean Blizz is continuing to market it as Overwatch... I assume they would have not done so if they lost that case.

I like the name
