If these measures like word bannings and topic closings (which are not permanent, right?) help then great, but so far it seems the opposite has happened.

Though I will say my piece, I think word bannings are dumb (and consequently Hammer's banning was dumb, he had a few toxic moments if you wanted to ban him ban him for that, not the way he talks, he should not be banned). As I've said before we are a small community we can easily moderate based on behavior and not on strict guidelines (which do honestly feel a bit like a power trip). We had a pretty laid back culture here on SoL and I liked that, it has gone downhill it's true and some moderation is called for. Any moderation after such a laissez-faire period will be painful so the Mods have my sympathy there. However after a few people are bashed on the nose for crossing over the line and things are brought back into shape we should back down from strict moderation again. Sure if someone again goes and does something outrageous they get a ban as appropriate but otherwise give people the benefit of the doubt and room to discuss all topics provided they are not abusive. We most certainly don't need a safe space here and I hope SoL does not become some heavily moderated ghost town because everyone left because they can't talk anymore.
Not too happy the politics threads are gone either, since as I've said I dislike censorship, but I will respect the moratorium.

Anyhow, no matter how things play out I hope it works out for this forum which we (hopefully) all love.
Overall I don't think it's any poster/Mod's fault when we are talking about the community has downhill, you can take a look at nearly every other communities' politic threads, they are all very toxic especially since the last election. The only way is to ban it for a while.

The difference is: WOW has gone downhill for a couple of years at least and its lore has never been good at all, people here are leaving the game and got bored with the lore, that's all.

Thanks, everybody.

I'm glad to see some work being done on reining in the political storm in a cup, though the damage is done already. Part of the reason I left (aside from temporarily losing interest in Warcraft) was related to how the perception on many posters changed for me with those political threads. I even specifically refrained from posting in them, but waddayaknow, I'm a very politics-interested person, by interest and by profession. As I said, the damage (for me) has been done, and on a level beyond warcrafty shitposting.

Too busy working on actual articles nowadays, though I've been looking at Warcraft recently. Also, DC. And Preston Jacobs.

With how slow ASOIAF has been going lately, as a fandom and a series, I guess it's no harm to look at how Warcraft's doing.

Is Donetsk freed? No, it isn't. I'm still away, and meeting my relative on "neutral grounds" nowadays.

At this point it's becoming like "Next Year In Jerusalem" for us escapees.

Oh Kir, you have no idea. The Second War Horde navy... it's an absolute joke! Darrowmere probably didn't happen still, none of those four battles. Alterac still wasn't destroyed. And Tol Barad was never in Baradin Bay - so we don't know if it's canon anymore either. A nightmare, Kir!

Good to see you.

We could probably mine the TCG for some new generic Warcraft avatars, so the gallery of buttocks does at the very least not greet you when you first check out the CP.

As for assings, I propose we simply replace the avatar with the cover for 'Cycle of Hatred'.

Yeah I know a little of how that is like thanks to Kosovo but it is not nearly as personal for me because I was not born there. What makes it terrible is that the problems in the east have devolved to a "frozen conflict" state like so many others in Eastern Europe and it is unlikely to end anytime soon.

Still I am very glad that you are safe and doing what you like in Kyiv. I hope this new interest in WoW means you will post more. So good to have you back

I am not in Kyiv, and the conflict is in no way "frozen" just because the frontline changed little the last two years.

There are artillery battles and infantry scout missions at the front every single day, but neither side feels confident enough for a massive storm of defenses.

Because it is shitty Soviet and Russian artillery, random shellings at civilian targets also happen.

This is not a frozen conflict, dammit.

Oh, I thought you and your uni people were relocated to Kyiv and opened up a sort of department in exile. Was I wrong or have things changed?

And yeah that is not a frozen conflict. Not much news comes from Ukraine these days, the world media is focused on Syria, so I genuinely thought there were only a few minor skirmishes and incidents over the last two years which is why I thought the conflict had mostly frozen and settled into a status quo where the Ukraine govt. keeps going on about how they will reclaim the land but don't and the rebel territories sort of keep existing in legal limbo (ala Osetia).

Sucks to hear things are way hotter then I realized. The constant shelling, skirmishes and troop movements must have really messed up the region. I know the devastation and suffering of your home region is very painful to see, I am so sorry this happened. "The strong do as they please and the weak as they must" is a very unpleasant thing when you're the "weak." Again, that is sadly something I too understand all too well.

Still, if both sides are pushing for conflict do you think there is a chance one might prevail soon and let this end, one way or the other?

Jesus christ, I'd hoped it'd calmed down or that at least you were safely away from it.

My sympathies
