Blizzard will no longer publish subscription numbers for World of Warcraft, and only focus on metric their shareholders care about, like gross profits and revenue.

Or it's just smart marketing that reflects the times. Sub numbers don't reflect the actual profitability and revenue from a product anymore, and haven't for a long time. The market has evolved, and raw subscription fees aren't as critical to revenue any longer.

Subs will spike every release, and they will drop after - sometimes more, sometimes less. They aren't a surefire indication of the success of the product anymore, if anything they only damage the image of the product if they are perceived to be "too low" by parts of the community.
