Quite right you are. Everyone knows that all Blizzard characters are merely facets of Metzen.

1) Gerard Dugalle - Fascinating, flawed, but honorable and devout. Really loved his arch and his whole characterization.

2) Ner'zhul - Old-school favourite here. I think there's a certain cunning to Ner'zhul that most WarCraft characters lack. He's also very dark and mysterious, but not entirely villainous or out and out evil.

3) Tyrande Whisperwind - I like Tyrande for a lot of the same reasons I like Dugalle actually. Really devout and pious, but very hard-headed and flawed at the same time. Loyal to her allies, but sort of close-minded and stubborn to her own detriment.

And yeah, that's my list.

Honorable Mention: Kerrigan for her cunning and humour (not SC2 Kerrigan, she sucks, she's preachy and annoying), Furion (Game Furion, novel Furion is a douche), Mannoroth and Archimonde are both good for the same reasons... ruthless, larger than life, intimidating... really cool villains. Jaina in RoC was a solid character, I liked her... um... that's it I think. Drakuru was neat, but I dunno if he was one of my favourites.

You know, I've never actually played Brood War, but your description of Dugalle makes me want to do it right now.

The relationship between Stukov and Dugalle is really worth it.

Brood War is rather excellent.

I can't agree more heartily.

I think I'll go watch Youtube videos of unit quotes for awhile now. Even if you think the cheesy, over-the-top melodrama of SCII wasn't awful, you can't deny that this is a hundred times more badass than...this.

That's pretty edgy. I don't think my list can quite top that:

1. Daggoth
2. Aldaris
3. Teron Gorefiend

Daggoth and Aldaris represent the old guard who fought against the pernicious influence of Kerrigan. Daggoth takes the top spot because it's cooler to be reactionary in an organization like the Zerg, and because the original Overmind-Cereberate system is so much qualitatively better than the "Queen of Blades," in a way that outmatches the difference between the pure Protoss ruled by the Judicator Caste (with the Great Stewardship and all that) and the one ruled by the Templar rabble and heretics.

While the Old Horde had other interesting heroes such as Gul'dan and most comparably Ner'zhul, Teron Gorefiend is kind of both of them (he went from serving one to serving the other), and even darker in appearance, but nobler and more heroic at heart; while still being nominally evil.

Honorable mentions: DuGalle and Stukov, Llane Wrynn, Kael'thas, Archimonde, Kil'jaeden, Zasz

Orb of Lightning

The Overmind: "Awaken my child and embrace the glory that is your birthright."
Arcturus Mengsk: "You don't seem to realize my situation here. I will not be stopped. Not by you, or the Confederates, or the Protoss, or anyone."
Fenix: "The Khala awaits me, Kerrigan, and although I am prepared to face my destiny you'll not find me easy prey!"

I'm obviously treating SCII as non-canon.

I am significantly less invested in Warcraft, and I don't really care anymore if it burns, as long as the flames consume WoW.

Gerard DuGalle: "Hah! The man who crowns himself 'Emperor' speaks to me of daring? You have far outlived your reputation, 'citizen' Mengsk."

Also, Zasz was right.

"Though you be the favored servant of the Overmind, you would do well to remember that you are just a servant. You know of our grand mission, Kerrigan. Would you put your personal whims before the will of the Overmind?"

SC2 is shit largely because of the emphasis on the "personal whims" of Kerrigan.

Not really. It has more to do with it's emphasis on a single battlecruiser and it's obsessive glorification of Jim Raynor. And the way it neutered Zeratul's character.

My favourites:

1) Ner'zhul (Beyond the Dark Portal & Reign of Chaos only. Literally every other scourge character is cooler than him in Frozen Throne.)
2) Tyrael (Diablo 2 only)
3) Kerrigan (SC1 only)

And no one was surprised.

Eh, I'm far from being a fan of James Raynor (actually I find his adventures to be the least interesting element in SC), but I thought Wings of Liberty was largely OK, except for that final plot involving Kerrigan (and especially the execrable ending cinematic). It's a different perspective from what you get in SC1, certainly less epic and not as interesting or dynamic overall, but other than the stuff relating to the Big Central Plot of Kerrigan the Savior and Overmind the Misunderstood, I found it quite tolerable and even entertaining.

By the way what do you mean about Zeratul? I can't think of any particularly glaring inconsistency in his character, but I might simply be not remembering properly.
