Default Characters who lived past their expiration dates.

You know them. Those characters who reached a fitting for their stories, but were kept around past those points.

Here's my list:

1. Arthas-Wolverine Syndrome. Looking just at WC3, it ended with Arthas being Ner'zhul's meat puppet. The human with no soul was used as the new body for the orc without one. The knight who was so loyal to the Lich King that instead of fighting for his kingdom, he left it to Kel'Thuzad. From Frostmourne onward Arthas was Ner'zhul's knight, it was fitting to sacrifice himself so that his king could be free. Instead, we have Arthas as the Lich King, with Ner'zhul being sent off in a novel.

2. Illidan-I still haven't seen the grounds for him to survive his fight with Arthas. Especially considering how he was used in TBC.

That's the Alliance. WoW would have been better if it started with the WC2-WC3 Alliance finished beyond Theramore and maybe Stormwind.

Arthas for the exact same reasons

Garrosh Hellscream & Varian Wrynn are actually the reverse of this for me: I thought they were all over the place & by the time "they" had got their act together (arguably), I already hated them, not because they were intended that way but because their characterisation seemed terrible to me

Malfurion & Tyrande aren't exactly this either, I don't think they needed to be killed off or otherwise done away with necessarily, I just feel that their "stories" uugh well ... I feel like they were/are-being wasted ... about as much as Illidan was (although plenty of people assumed that he was meant to be dead @ the end of W3:FT! On that note I'd say that Kael & Vashj could also have been used better...)

All of the Sons of Lothar, except maybe Khadgar.

I'd say Maiev's an obvious one right now. Unless Blizzard actually plan to write a reasonable storyline about night elven society, where she's the old guard, she's just a familiar name brought back to be a familiar strawman/purple dispensor/way to big Jarod up. Especially given that the chance to kill her off was not only obvious, but would have actually developed her character as opposed to tearing it down to build others' up.

Just you wait. That Warden accompanying Khadgar is actually a spy or Maeiv. Maeiv is going to get that shard of the Vision of Time and go to an alternate Azeroth just before the Legion is summoned. She's going to inform Ravencrest of the plot, have Azshara and Xavius imprisoned, and then we have Warlords of Kalimdor. It is known (There's that Highborne Azshara NPC added in the recent builds).

Harrison Jones and Leeroy Jenkins really come to mind even though they aren't really characters with stories.

WoW originally wasn't going to have factions like we have them today. It was just going to be the various racial and reputation factions. While this system probably would have been better, out of the current factions the Horde is probably worse than the Alliance.

I think I heard someone say before, that it felt like the Lich King expansion was trying to eliminate the characters who had the most potential to grow?

Examples I remember were Saurfang's son and Bolvar.

Characters don't generally live past their expiration dates (though I might call Maiev an exception). Expiration date implies that the characters have naturally gone bad with old age, not that there was simply nothing interesting done with the character.

Aren't those the only two he killed?

Maev is fine, imo. How she was used in Wolfheart... not entirely, but her survival is fine. She's our Sasuke.

I think they re-blessed Nordrassil for about fifteen seconds until they lost their powers again thanks to the death of Deathwing.

No, they forgot because Thrall was abducted by the Twilight Cult and then there was a wedding.

No, Thrall and Malf forgot to do their magic thing with the tree. The aspects did remember, though did it offscreen because we needed to have a wedding between the main character and the NPC they forgot to implement voice strength/distance scaling for.

WoW would have been better if it followed the DnD RPG spin-off where it was focused exclusively on Kalimdor.

Alliance and Horde could have worked how factions do in The Secret World; you can communicate, you can group, trade, PvE, do everything together except PvP (arena being the exception) and visit each others capital building (in this case capital city I suppose).

& if they did do it that way they would have had me as a constant subscriber for a decade. I'd probably be defending plenty of poorly written (or railroading), 'justifying' it as them struggling to keep up with all the different storylines or some inane reasoning which 'explains' without actually justifying

You know who I think has really run out of story? Metzen
