Background
Ten years have passed since the opening of the Dark Portal.

With the portal came the Horde, and a series of wars that devastated Azeroth. But the fires of invasion wrought an unprecedented union between the eastern kingdoms, a union known as the Alliance of Lordaeron.

A recent victory at Grim Batol has defeated the Dragonmaw Clan, rescued the dragonqueen Alexstrasza, completed the liberation of Khaz Modan, and decisively ended the Horde as a viable threat. Now, the kingdoms of the Alliance must rebuild. More importantly, they must decide whether they will continue to function as the Alliance in this new era--one without the Horde as a common enemy.

Already the elves of Quel'Thalas and gnomes of Gnomeregan have begun distancing themselves, for different reasons. The dwarven clans seem dedicated to the cause, as does newly-reclaimed Stormwind, their inhabitants still grateful to the Alliance for reconquering their kingdoms. But Stormwind and Ironforge strain from the efforts of rebuilding, and they are far away from the current area of conflict. This conflict has been four years in the making, almost as old as the Alliance itself, stemming from one kingdom's act of treason.

Alterac. The land whose king--Aiden Perenolde--betrayed his own world to the ravages of the Horde. Alterac was occupied during the latter days of the Second War by King Terenas of Lordaeron, but Perenolde was allowed to continue reigning until the other Alliance kings could agree on what should be done with his kingdom.

Perenolde never gave them the chance. Shortly after the reopening of the Dark Portal, he made a deal with an orcish strike force led by Teron Gorefiend and the dragon Deathwing. In exchange for the Book of Medivh, the orcs and black dragons destroyed the Alliance garrison and ended Alterac's first occupation.

Yet, Gorefiend and Deathwing eventually fled through the portal back to Draenor, where the Alliance Expedition pursued them. History is unclear on what befell Alterac after its second treason, but we might assume the Alliance was not as kind to Perenolde as before. When all was said and done, Alterac City lay in ruins. And the Alliance leaders no longer allowed Perenolde the comfort of his throne, as they continued discussions on the kingdom's fate.

Lordaeron and Stromgarde, then Gilneas, and then Kul Tiras, remained at odds with each other over the broken kingdom and how it would affect the balance of power. Dalaran worked to mediate, but the Alterac Succession Crisis threatened to tear the Alliance apart. A brief glimmer of hope appeared in the form of Lord Daval Prestor, whose lineage and charisma seemed to make him the ideal candidate as Alterac's new king. But this hope was dashed about the same time as the Battle of Grim Batol, when Prestor suddenly vanished and new questions were raised about his lineage.

Now, the four great powers of Lordaeron, Stromgarde, Gilneas, and Kul Tiras remain in deadlock over the fate of Alterac. Even Dalaran, as small and close as it is geographically, has found itself drawn in. Yet the human kingdoms are far from the only groups with interest in the Alterac Question.

In the chaos of repeated occupations and uprisings, Perenolde and his son have rallied the former nobles of their kingdom and built an army of rogues and bandits known as the Syndicate. Unfortunately, this will bring them at odds with the established Assassin's League of the region, alternatively known as Ravenholdt, who are naturally taking advantage of the chaos in Alterac for their own interests. There are also rumors that Lord Aedelas Blackmoore's forces of Durnholde Keep are beginning to mobilize, on the pretext that Blackmoore has discovered a family connection to Alterac nobility, thus making him the best option for the kingdom's new monarch. Caught in the midst of this are groups of settlers from the Stormpike Clan and Bronzebeard Clan, having been told by questionable sources that the lands of Alterac and southern Lordaeron were open to settlement.

As the Alliance races scramble to stake a claim in Alterac, they will discover that the former Horde is not as dead as they imagined. The Frostwolf Clan, exiled from the very Horde that the Alliance recently defeated, has been settled in the Alterac Valley for nearly as long as the Dark Portal has been open--seeking only to live their lives in peace and penance. It is unknown if the same can be said about the Warsong Clan, never accounted for after the second destruction of the portal, now wandering through the lands of Lordaeron in a desperate search for their destiny. In contrast, the motives of the Stonemaul Clan of ogres (soon to be renamed Crushridge), turned renegade after the Horde's defeat, are strikingly simplistic.

EDIT: Special thanks to Anansi for his hard work in providing us a new and beautiful map! /EDIT

Minimum Players: 3
Maximum Players: 13
Goal: Capture 12 of the 22 supply centers
Differences with other Diplomacy rules?:
1) There are only armies, no fleets. Armies can cross land spaces as well as the few sea spaces.
2) Each faction has 1 starting center, instead of the usual 3 or 4. If there are thirteen players, all of the starting centers are occupied in the beginning. If there are fewer than thirteen players, the starting centers for unplayed factions will be empty at the game's beginning.
3) There are no home centers. You can build armies on any center you capture.
4) Do you see that line around Dun Baldar, Field of Strife, and Frostwolf Keep? This is the Alterac Valley. You can't cross into it. However, you can cross over it. Growless Cave, Gallows Corner, The Headland, and Corrahn's Dagger are all connected to each other.

Why is the map so ugly?: It isn't anymore! Ha ha!

Here's the official rulebook: http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy.pdf
And a wiki version: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Diplomacy/Rules

But I'll be around so you can PM me with any questions. Also keep in mind that our version only has armies, no fleets (so your armies can go on the sea spaces). Plus our version doesn't have home supply centers (so you can build new units on any center, instead of the centers you start the game with).

With those big red barrier lines in the Alterac Valley, an army in Dun Baldar would be able to move to Field of Strife or Gavin's Naze. Note that neither of those places are supply centers (supply centers have a circle on them), so you'd have to use the next turn to capture Hillsbrad Fields, Lordamere Internment Camp, or Frostwolf Keep depending on where you went--and then you'd be able to build a new army.

Hopefully we can start next week, but I really don't think it's going to work unless we get a third player. With just you two butting heads against each other, it'd probably just be a stalemate within the first two turns.

Most excellent! Three players makes a playable game!

We'll wait until next week to see if anyone else wants to join, and then things can get started. I was thinking of having Mondays as the time most things happen, with you guys sending in moves by Sunday nights. Is that bad for anyone?

Original plan was to expand the map east to include Aerie Peak and Western Darrowmere Lake... opening the door for the Wildhammer Clan and a completely farcical Farstrider Expedition, for extra dwarf and elfness.

I also considered throwing in Winterax Tribe for some troll action and making Dun Garok be straight-up representative of a Bronzebeard Clan or Bronzebeard Expedition. In fact...

OPENINGS!

Lordaeron: start in Eastern Lordamere Lake
Stromgarde: start in Alterac Passes
Gilneas: start in Ambermill Outskirts
Dalaran: start in Violet Citadel
The Syndicate: start in Ruins of Alterac
Warsong Clan: start in Warsong Cavern
Stonemaul Clan: start in Crushridge Hold
Blackmoore's Forces: start in Durnholde Keep

Really want someone else? Pitch the idea. The best time to screw with the rules is before the game starts, and after the game finishes.

Easy there, Admiral Mahan. Simple game! Armies, fleets, and air squadrons are consolidated into the single units.

When you move your guy into Lordamere Lake, then you can imagine it's a super Dalaran floatingarcanetower fleet or something. And if you move into the awkward-looking "South Thondroril River" space that I've had doubts about, totally imagine that a makeshift canoe squad is involved.

As for dragons... it's unlikely they'll be here after the events of Year 10. Satisfy yourself with imagining Dragonhawks instead. (Unless you play as Raveholdt and RP some Black Dragon goodness).

You want a Warcraft Diplomacy game with fleets? Make a world map of present day. Lots of ocean space there!

Maybe a future version could expand to Aerie Peak.

I'd offer you the chance to RP the Wildhammers on one of the unoccupied spots like Stonemaul, Warsong, or Ravenholdt. But man, you look like you're really getting into the ogre thing.
