WarCraft 3 B.net Eyeball Every lore source is going to be just someone's PoV

So, I think that the devs are paving the way for declaring every single lore source as canon, but at the same time as just a point of view of an universe-character. Thus, every source can be flawed. Funnily enough, that's the way how Warhammer 40,000 novels work.

The thought had first occured to me thanks to the answer about the Chronicle from Blizzcon 2019. Tldr: it's canon, but it's written from titans' and their servants' PoV. I tried to ask the devs about this, but to no success.

And after reading the recent Polygon article, I'm starting to belive that it's the case. First, the Chronicle, now the game itself is an unreliable narrator:

“A lot of the time, if players see something in the game, they take it for granted that it’s the absolute truth. It could be a book they read on a shelf somewhere, it could be something a drunk guy in a bar says to you at one time or another. Whereas in the real world, if you ran into a drunk guy in a bar and he says something to you, you’re not going to say ‘oh, absolutely, that must be the way that it is!’”

“It’s not that we’re trying to deceive the player, it’s that we’re trying to present them with, ‘hey, here’s this living, breathing world full of real people’. Like there are in the real world, and people interpret things differently and convey things differently.”

As for how it should all be treated, if things will really go this way, I think, Drz nailed it... 10 years ago.

I always figured that Chronicles was from a neutral, omniscient pov. That said, this doesn't really surprise me.

The shit we're pissed about them messing up usually isn't even that kind of 'written' retcon stuff...

It's stuff we, the players, see ingame like Thrall sparing Gallywix or Garrosh going stupid-evil.

The idea that an unreliable narrator in written bits will help them is laughable.

The Chronicles account of the Second War was written by a garrison soldier in Terenas's castle who was inclined to heavy drinking and who believed Daelin Proudmoore was Light's gift to the ocean, and had no idea how much terror the Horde juggernaughts and destroyers wrought on the shores of Lordaeron.

Warcraft II is semi-canon again.

Aedis Brom and Christoph Faral might be those drunk guys in the tavern telling lies. Or, they might be the only ones who still remember.

So Old Gods being servants of voidwalkers is just a Titan hypothesis?

Or, as it probably presents itself in their minds, a clever way to leave the door open for any retcon in any source of lore at any point.

And sort of understandably so. Blizzard are great at building the physical world and nailing the right atmospheres with dope visuals and fantastic soundtracks, and making easy-to-pick-up addictive games. They're not very good at story telling. The lore and story has always been second priority. Blizzard is not making some cohesive epic novel, and never has. They've made games with vaguely defined stories to serve as a backdrop for the gameplay. It's been easily digested comic book-styled pulpy fantasy action since at least the WCIII era.

This is not really that bad of a move for them. The whole lore is inconsistent as all hell and there's no easy way to fix it, if there is any, and I think even they admit that they're not likely to make things consistent from now on. This way they can go on as they always have with fewer complaints, in theory. It's still a good indication that they suck at story telling but I don't think many people who hated their story telling really expected them to make things better.
