Orc Icon (War3) What have we learned from Draenor?

Similar to my other thread about Pandaria. Let's have one last hurrah for the blades of grass.
  • Genocide is fine as long you ally with your victims to kill a mean demon lord.
  • Thrall is balding.
  • When the leaders you want to corrupt ask what they must forsake if they drink demon blood you are honest and say they lose everything.
  • A lumberjack couple had the best story in the entire expansion.

Blizzard can't write enemies with good intentions without making them evil.

Let's be fair about this one. The Hellscream short story made it pretty clear that were it not for Garrosh showing him the full scope of the consequences, Grommash himself acknowledged that he would've totally accepted Gul'dan's sales pitch.

The architecture of the Draenei is the most beautiful in the game, but when you play Alliance/Horde, you've got to act like a colonist and build your own castle, instead of using buildings already there.

That I can't tell who's dumber: Orcs for following and killing anyone with little explanation, or Draenei for tolerating them.

Blizzard writes side races better than main ones.

Orcs will literally pierce anything.

Metzen secretly hates Ogrim.

Blackhand is surprisingly an interesting character.

Metzen secretly hates Kilrogg.

Blizzard believes that selfie cams, outhouses and Pepe are the content players truly want.

We kill off interesting Orc Clans with abandon.

Draenei are dumb but pretty.

More dumb cat people without purpose.

Blizzard hates islands.

- That a few minutes after you bring ~20 people to Draenor, you get sent to an island where your faction has already built a town that's much bigger than yours will ever be, and if you're Horde, not only is the town there but it is also placed on the opposite side of the world.
- Draenei are space elves.
- It's ok to commit genocide if your name is Orgrim or Grom.
- The main storyline of the expansion requires legendary progress and will be deleted after the expansion.

Blizzard can have an expansion with numerous advances in storytelling and worldbuilding, resulting in a very enjoyable experience, and then decide to not implement any of those advances in their next expansion.

Don't rewrite a zone if you're not going to change the cinematic it's leading into.

A dozen evil horde variants later, and it's still not worked out once. Sigh.

It is possible to make a battleground more ludicrous lorewise than Eye of the Storm.

Someone really likes doing things with the characters, and really doesn't like doing things with the cultures, politics or history of the world surrounding those characters.

The garrisons should have been on Ashran where the towns are now.

Even after more than a decade of thinking about how to implement it*, a good player housing system (or similar system) has not been developed for WoW.

Hrm, maybe we should do a 'housing design' thread.

* (there's some architecture file names hinting at player housing going all the way back to vanilla, though they obviously never got far.)

* It is clear that Blizzard does not do well if they are not passionate about what they are doing. "Orc fatigue" took away the problem of too many orcs, but made it so they were not as big of a deal in Talador (and other places) as they should have been. Also, they have no supply routes from the Blackrock base to the south, despite the insistence that they do. That was cut, only existing in vestigial instances.
* Garrisons were almost like an attempt to make WoW a single-player game. WoW does not hold up as a single-player game compared to its competitors, as it is an MMO and it shows. Garrisons were not bad, but they were not a good direction overall.
* Actually give some revelations about history and backstory before throwing a continent away next expansion. I mean really. The Breakers? The Primals? The Zangar? The ogres? There were saberon apparently? Minimal. We get what they do, but then we get the same MO over and over with no twists or details. Only the writing of the arakkoa did it right.

Sounds like we need more of your reviews on your blog, then again I don't think WoD offered anything substantial to say about the Alliance and Horde specifically.

I feel like a thread on discussing housing design in WoW would give me a chance to showcase my "garrisons from classic to WoD" concept that's been percolating for awhile.

Blizzard wants us to be able to play for free as long as we're willing to spend a few hours a week in-game.

This about sums up what was, for me, important about Draenor. We learned that the orcs did not live as this penultimate Noble Savage hippie-dippie ideal... They had no room for it. Their culture was as crass and barbaric as you would expect. And that's good.
