That is why human babies need good parents to take care of them. The gestation period is long and humans take a long time to be self-sufficient when they grow up.

Marsupials are said to be unable to give rise to a bat equivalent. I suspect that the reasoning may offer a reason for human babies' helplessness.

The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.

No one ever said elves are nice.
Elves are bad.

That there'll never be "bat" (or "ape") marsupials.

I like my sentences with that certain something.

Actually, the human infant's grip is strong enough that they can hold themselves up with it. It's infant instinct to grasp whatever they put their hand on. Their grip is so strong they can hang off your index finger with one hand.

They also have a few other interesting preloaded instincts. Rooting is where you can brush a baby's cheek and it will move its mouth toward your finger looking for a nipple.

Yep, this is also true. People simply don't know because their society doesn't allow the babies to show off.

Seriously though, baby talking/cooing to a child is a big pet peeve.

Trying to get myself motivated to do a rather difficult worksheet on integration (where not all of questions seem to work with the methods you're taught), teaching myself enough quantum physics to do a tutorial on it, and two days of physical lab work (which takes all day and feels utterly useless). All in a week. Weeee!

There is nothing I hate more than spending a week (or more) in a lab only to turn out zero results at the end.

Alternatively, the opposite is awesome.

Maths sheet finished! Time to read lots and lots of quantum physics!

So this girl at my class got an offer to be interviewed by Cambridge University. Freaking Cambridge. She wants to study economics, but the problem is that she knows jack shit about the subject, so I've been crash-coursing her on basic concepts about world business and economics for the last week. She's a clever girl though, and she's progressing quite well in my opinion. The problem is that for things like these you need to be aware of what's currently happening around the world, and she only started to pay attention to the news recently. These things take time, man...

So, why would she apply for something she doesn't know much about, then only try to find the basics a couple of weeks before the interview. It's like, what, 2-3 weeks away?

On the plus side, if she does get in I can add it to the list of people who get into Cambridge showing just how low standers they have!

(Also, which college?)

It's a classic case of "people not knowing what they want to be when they grow up". Just a note to make it clear; she's by no means a dumb girl. She gets high grades in Maths, Chemistry, History, et cetera. Straight A's all around. The problem is that she never took A-level Business and Economics classes at school so I had to explain to her basic concepts like Government Bonds and Trade Deficits.

She doesn't know what to study at university, so she chose economics because apparently "she's interested" in that. But we all know that she chose the subject in question because she didn't know what the hell to chose. I agree with you completely, if she were truly "interested" in economics she should've started studying about these things on her own, like I did.

Well, she certainly could switch to another subject while she's there, though she'd then have to show she were capable. While it may be a hard switch to pull off, maths and chemistry would put her in good standing for natural sciences (they have a history and philosphy of science course as one of the 2nd year options, and you can even get a degree in it should you wish). It would also be easier to get in given that she's likely to have prior knowledge of the topics.

And yeah, Oxbridge is fucking difficult. I was interested enough to buy and start reading degree textbooks, was extremely excited about the chemistry Olympiad, and still find a lot of the work boring (so much maths and physics, but the organic's been great), and while it's been alright so far, as I've said above, this week is going to be... interesting. For someone only interested enough to start learning a few weeks before interview, I'd certainly be worried about how they'd manage. (Then again, one of the guys doing my course admits he's not too keen on chemistry, but he's still bloody good at it and at this rate will probably get a first)

That's why I think all of this is ridiculous. She should've chosen a subject that builds upon and expands what she has already learned at school, not a subject that you casually happen to be "interested" in.

Any idea what college she's got an interview at btw? Might be a bit weird sending a message to a friend through an acquaintance of an internet forum acquaintance, but you never know...
