Shadow Orb The Horror Films and Literature Thread

I figured I'd make this out of curiosity as to who else enjoys horror. (Whether it's classic horror, modern horror, or the act of just being scared shitless.)

I suppose it's fair warning to say that this thread might contain things that people would miss sleep over if they made a quick peak but I stress that I would like to discuss horror in films and novels rather than just seeing creepypasta linked everywhere.

Anyway, to start off here's a particular definition of horror that I certainly agree with.

So yeah, who else enjoys a good monster flick or some classic literature?

I don't mind horror films, but most are just too pointless and straightforward for my tastes.

I do enjoy some like:

It
Ring
Drag Me To Hell
Horror On Elm Street (original)

And others I can't remember right now.

But I also want to mention the TV show Supernatural, it is kinda horror, especially the early episodes. X-files scared me too when I was a kid.

The only horror film that disturbed me is Hellraiser. The thought of these demons dressed in leather outfits offering pleasure, which is eternal torture makes my skin crawl. Though the novel ''Hellbound heart'' is better than the movie.

I also love Lovecraft's monsters and how we humans are like insects to them. Not to mention the creepy atmosphere his stories have. I used to open my window when it rained and start reading one of his stories. So creepy yet so great.

Vampires, zombies, or the undead in general never scared me.

I will mention something about music too. If you want some creepy songs listen to Nox Arcana. I love them. Here's one called Deep in the woods.

Yeah, despite the title I wholeheartedly welcome other things like music, TV shows, and video games.

I guess it sorta is pretty much proven that the more horror we witness the more used to it we get, desensitization and all. (But the whole point of horror is that it's a feeling, an experience, and at some point in our lives we experience it.)

Here's my personal favorites that are more fun rather than scary:
Creepshow 1 and 2
The Evil Dead 1 and 2
An American Werewolf In London
Tales from the Crypt series
Trick R' Treat
Every classic horror film made by Universal

Here's some that have scared me shitless:
The Grudge
Paranormal Activity 1 and 3
It
The Ring
The Exorcist
Insidious

Werewolf in london is one of the coolest movies ever. Though I may be biased because I love werewolf movies.

I'm a pretty big wimp when it comes to horror movies if I watch them in a theatre(which I avoid), but I like to watch them at home. One that really disturbed me when I was younger though was a mexican horror movie called Graverobbers, literally did not sleep all night.

It's not as much horror as it is prime 80s splatter, but I love the Elm Street-series, and I think Freddy Krueger is the most awesome of all the movie serial killers.

Del Toros vampire books are good.

As are The Noble Dead Saga.

Horror movies? Ehh. Hard to get me. Ghost spirit shit I'd just bail and and physical monsters.... Well, their physical which means I can kick their asses (potentially).

Freddy always bothered me. And clowns.

Maybe, but to be fair it's easy to talk about things you would do in a situation like that.

Actually being in such a scary moment would likely be different because circumstances change and you reaction might backfire.

Can we discuss real life horror like murder cases and serial killers here?

Eh I don't think it would be wise, would likely get derailed.

Think of this like the comic book or anime threads, it's purely fictional stuff.

I am surprised that none of our resident Slowpoke haters has commented on your rising interest in serial killings

Orb of Venom

Does Cabin in the Woods count? Or is that more of a Corporate Thriller?

It's horror imo, definitely a sort of tribute or affectionate parody of it.

Also my opinion but thrillers do carry some elements of horror. The Ring is an example of that.

I'm always a big fan of shows like Forensic Files and unsolved cases, this year I spent months on the Cleveland Torso Murderer research.

The Last Broadcast is a pretty good horror film that's basically like a movie version of those type of shows.

It also paved the way for found footage type of horror movies.

The first horror I really read was the Monster manga. I's really psychological based, but god damn Johan and his backstory with the picture book about the monster... holy shit.

Damn that series was creepy.

The other would be The Ring's manga. That one was fuckin scary when I was in elementary school.

I really think the most horrible creature is not monster or ghost, but ordinary or good looking man, usually behave like ordinary people, but under the cover there is a ruthless and smart killer. They even use their good looking and people's sympathy to lure people into trap and kill them.

I am not a big fan of horror. For some reason, I dislike it, not because I am scared or anything, but because most modern horror flicks are essentially the same old stuff getting recycled again and again.

I liked the Exorcist, though.

I read an idea for a succubus horror movie once that I really want to see made.

It was basically two films in one.

The first layer, and the advertising for the movie, would present it as a genuinely funny romcom, only at the end, the girl ends up brutally killing the guy.

Only throughout the movie, if you pay attention, you see little scratches on the walls, gashes, tiny things that tell you something is not right. And if you watch the movie again looking for things., the whole thing takes on a much darker tone. Friends who don't make a party end up being dead, the guy star being tired not from work or hectic life, but because he's being fed on. The guys life being ruined not for true love, but by the manipulations of a she-beast from hell. Things like that.

I've always thought about those kind of scare movies, but sadly, with the internet it would be instantly spoiled.

I don't think we can call most Zombie Movies horror these days.. It's more a power fantasy, you know?
