It's great, I get to fight 80% of my battles in a Dwarf favored terrain.

That pic wasn't too long after Chaos invaded.

I'm at turn 175 now and have completely eliminated all the Greenskin factions, taken over the Badlands, and destroyed the Warriors of Chaos.

The Norscan tribes are still around and are still pretty strong, they keep sacking Kraka Drak.

I'm trying to eliminate the Vampire Counts now.

The only Dwarf colonizable region that I don't own is Karak Ziflin, but they're Bretonnia's vassals so I'm not sure what I'm gonna do there.

I bought the game last night and played it today as Greenskins.

I have wiped out all other orc tribes, destroyed most of the dwarves and rule everything south of Blackfire pass. There is constant rebellions which is annoying as heck, but man is it fun to have 6 large armies and they in turn have WAAAGH! armies with them.

So I read into the universe timeline a bit. Is there a definitive canonical ending? Because all I could find was that the Storm of Chaos is sort of unresolved, except in a parallel universe where Dwarfs, Humans and Elves unite in a Council of Light or something along those lines and usher in an Age of Order after pushing back Chaos. But that was a parallel universe apparently, so what happens in the prime universe? No wiki seems to know, is it just left open for players to tabletop it out, or for interpretation?

Chaos won, the world was destroyed. But Karl Franz was actually Sigmar, so he survived. Now it's fantasy in space.

Look up Age of Sigmar.

Behind the scenes reasoN: WH fantasy didn't sell well, so they decided to make it more like WH40K but keep it fantasy.

Read up a bit...that sounds...very, very dumb to me. Chaos wins, cool. But uh..."Sigmar floats through space and meets a dragon, they become good friends". Wtf.

Yes, it's as dumb as it sounds.

It was a very cynical attempt to bring 40k players over to 'Fantasy' by justifying the introduction of the now infamous Sigmarines (immortal super soldier humans, formed by the Empero- uh, Sigmar to be his lightning shock troops and defend humanity and organised into chapters, sound familiar?) known in the lore as, sigh, Stormcast Eternals.

Most Fantasy players despise the lore and the rules changes, which is why companies like Privateer Press (Warmachine/Hordes) and Mantic Games (Kings of War) have seen such a huge surge in new players and sales: their attempt to bring 40k over to Fantasy failed, they pissed off almost all of their existing fans who went elsewhere.

Unlike 40k, Fantasy only ever took place on one world, which coupled with Games Workshop revulsion at ever moving the storyline forward (40k has been more or less stagnant for about thirteen years, Fantasy a bit longer), didn't lend itself well to big, world changing and cataclysmic events, unlike 40k where you can scribble in the names of a few more planets that need blowing up or taking over.

For that reason, every time there's been a big new threat that may or may not take over the world there's been this weird AU formed from it that exists only in its own canon: Storm of Chaos was retconned into one and never happened, Warhammer Online was one, Total War: Warhammer is presumably one as well. The only 'canon' ending is the End Times, which did literally end the Warhammer Fantasy world.

I mean, when has that ever worked - that is, taking a franchise/universe that was once very popular and turning it on its head to kickstart declining sales.

"40k works, let's just turn it into that" is so, so dumb. I don't even own any of this stuff or have ever played/read it and now I feel like I don't want to.

Except for TW:Warhammer, this I have to have. I've watched enough to decide that this is probably the best TW since Rome, and it has an awesome IP to boot.

I never really liked the Dawn of War games.

Pretty much no one considers it canon, except GW's suits.

Anyway, are you guys using any particular mods?

I'm doing a vanilla run first. My time has been split between this, Overwatch and work so I've not got too far yet. Currently on Turn 54-ish of my Dwarf campaign and I'm surprised Chaos hasn't reared its head yet. Well on the way to conquering pretty much the entirety of the Greenskin lands south of me, with a combined force of Barak Varr and the Border Princes doing an admirable job of holding Grimgor's two Waagghh's in place elsewhere in the Badlands (four AI armies have been fighting each other side by side for about three turns now) which means I am pretty much taking everything without any resistance what so ever.

I'll probably use the mod that has Legendary Lords begin at their lore appropriate places. Ungrim Ironfist starting with Karak Kadrin rather than at Karaz-a-Karak for instance.

I can't think of an example where it has worked, personally.

I've always been interested in but never played any Total War games. They seem too complicated.

It's like a far less complicated Civilization with cool epic battle mode.

Yeah, I heard good things about Rome II. And Hannibal is one of my favorites so if I like Warhammer, I'll be sure to try out Rome after that.

Dunno about Rome II. It's still considered one of their worst releases and was nearly unplayable at launch. It's a bit better now I hear but still far from greatness.

The original Rome is very cheap and a timeless classic.
