Default Soft Factions?

Anyway, I think races would not be "such" a problem, if we would give each "faction" three to begin with, rest with expansions.

The Alliance - Humans, Dwarves, High elves, Gnomes, pure Draenei.

The Horde - Orcs, Tauren, Troll. Goblins and Ogres possible expansion races.

The Pact (or whatever) - Night Elves, Furbolg, Worgen (an actual race rather than curse), Treants (bulky tree humanoids), Cenarions (if you would abandon the bipedal humanoids only rule). Perhaps also Dark Trolls.

The Illidari - Broken Draenei, Blood Elves (more differentiated from High Elves), Fel Orcs, Satyr, Naga (if you would abandon the bipedal humanoids only rule).

The Scourge - Skeletals (Lich-like undead), Plaguelings (plague deformed), Ice Trolls (undead), Vrykul (undead), Dark Humans (Necromancers, Death Knights).

The Forsaken - either make them a part of the Illidari, or make them actual servants of the Void and give them their own faction.

Well, yes, GW2 system would probably be for the best. Although I would make (regarding the player and environment interactions) the differences and gaps between the soft factions far more profound with an intricate reputation system.

So if the idea behind "soft factions" is to give players more choice and/or mobility between different groups, then I don't know if delimiting by race really serves that particularly well. If it's a matter of saying "this is where your character starts out" then yeah, co-locating some starting experiences might work to that end.

To work off Marthen's list above (while adding my own flair) here's what I get:

Classic WoW:
  • The Alliance: Humans, Dwarves, and Gnomes. Starts in Stormwind.
  • The Horde: Orcs, Trolls, and Tauren. Starts in Durotar.
  • Pact of Hyjal: Night Elves, Furbolg, and Treants. Starts in Darnassus.
  • The Forsaken: Undead Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes, Orcs, Trolls, Tauren, Night Elves, and Furbolg. Starts in Tirisfal.

Burning Crusade:
  • Alliance gains Pure Draenei. Starts in Azuremyst.
  • Horde gains Ogres. Starts in Blade's Edge Mountains.
  • Pact gains Sporelings. Starts in Zangarmarsh.
  • Forsaken gains Cursed Arakkoa. Starts in Terokkar.
New faction: The Illidari. Contains Blood Elves, Broken Draenei, Fel Orcs, and Satyr. Starts in Hellfire Peninsula.

Wrath of the Lich King:
New Race: Goblins. Starts in Kezan.
  • Alliance gains the Light's Trust Union.
  • Horde gains the Bilgewater Cartel.
  • Pact gains the Cashcrop Cartel.
  • Forsaken gains the Deathdealer Cartel.
  • Illidari gains B.O.O.M.
New Faction: Cult of the Damned. No new races, but a new starting experience in Eastern Plaguelands.
Also, Death Knight experience gets expanded to send DKs to their race-based original factions at the end.

Cataclysm:
New Race: Worgen. Unique Starting Experiences for each faction.
  • Alliance: Gilnean Worgen, start in Gilneas.
  • Horde: Frostwolf Packs, start in Winterspring.
  • Pact of Hyjal: Servants of the Scythe, start in Felwood.
  • Forsaken: Original Sons of Argual, start in Silverpine Forest.
  • Illidari: Frostwolf Exiles, start in Nagrand.
  • Cult of the Damned: New Sons of Argual, start in Grizzly Hills.
New Faction: The Twilight's Hammer. New starting experience in Darkwhisper Gorge.

Mists of Pandaria:
  • New Race: Pandaren. Starts on the Wandering Isle.
  • New Faction: Order of the Golden Lotus. Starts in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

Warlords of Draenor:
New mini-factions that might include new playable races or skins for existing races.
  • Alliance gains the Council of Exarchs.
  • Horde gains the Frostwolf Clan.
  • Pact gains the Botani.
  • Forsaken gains the Shadowmoon Exiles.
  • Illidari gains the Ascended Arakkoa.
  • Cult of the Damned gains the Shadowmoon Clan.
  • Twilight's Hammer gains the Gorian Empire.
  • Order of the Golden Lotus gains Shattrath City Council.

I like it. Though the Pure Draenei of the Burnign Crusade should start in an Outland location as the other new races. Maybe a not-so-wrecked and floating Farahlon?

Agreed. They shoehorned these ugly mofos into the alliance. I want High Elves and I don't give a shit about "population numbers".

Shadow Orb

Your Forsaken would be even worse than the actual Forsaken. Play whatever you want but against their friends! You now get to steal characters from all races instead of just one!

Twilights Hammer?

Forsaken of any race?

I... gotta say this seems overambitious.

I'm sure it'd be aesthetic only, the racials would be the same for all Forsaken.
